The Marshall Thundering Herd take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the odds for the game have Marshall favored to pick up the victory.
Marshall blew it last week when they gave up way too many points to Western Kentucky last week as the Thundering Herd lost 67-66 on a 2-point conversion. Their dream undefeated season is now over but they still have a chance to win the Conference USA title with a win over Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs finished with 7-1 record in the West Division, but were 8-4 overall on the season. The lone loss in conference came at Old Dominion in overtime a couple of weeks ago, but Louisiana Tech put 76 on Rice last week.
Both teams can score points with the Bulldogs posting 38.8 points per game while Marshall posted 46.7 points per game this season, which is good for second best in the country. The Herd run the football well (288.5 — seventh) and Rakeem Cato has tossed for better than 3,300 yards and 35 scores this season.
Marshall also has a legit back in Devon Johnson, who rumbled for 1,600 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. He did get banged up last week and is questionable for this game, but if he is back and ready to go, it gives Marshall an edge.
La Tech has seen quarterback Cody Sokol throw for 29 touchdowns this season and they also have a bruising back in Kenneth Dixon, who has 18 touchdowns.
The Bulldogs probably has the better defense between the two schools but they are playing on the road in this one. If the Herd come out and lay an egg, Louisiana Tech could hang around and score some points. If Marshall wants to still play in a decent bowl game, they'll come out and pick up the win. It all depends on the team's drive in this one.
