The Ball State Cardinals and Toledo Rockets take to the field in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on ESPN3. Currently the odds for the game have the Rockets favored by double digits in this one.
Ball State is getting a couple of touchdowns in this matchup, which certainly seems like quite a bit. Both the Rockets and Cardinals are 1-2 to start the season. This might be an overreaction by the oddsmakers as Toledo fell behind Cincinnati last week 34-0 but came back to lose 58-34.
Toledo, laying two touchdowns, has given up better than 42 points per game to opponents this year.
Ball State hasn't exactly looked good, either. The Cardinals beat Colgate to open the season but have been on the bad end of a couple of games at Iowa and at home against Indiana State. The Cardinals did play well against Iowa a couple of weeks ago, but last week's loss to Indiana State certainly takes away their credibility.
But getting more than two scores on the road in a rivalry game seems like a bit much. Ball State has beaten Toledo the last two games in the series, which have been close calls — the Cardinals have won the games by a combined 65-51, picking up wins by a touchdown each time.
Toledo QB Logan Woodside came in for Phillip Ely last week and threw for three touchdowns. The Rockets threw the ball 50 times in that game, which is exactly what they had to do being down 34 points early. He'll look to throw the rock against a Ball State defense that gave up 317 yards through the air to Indiana State last time out.
In a conference rivalry game it's tough to pass up the multiple touchdowns in this one. Neither team has been good enough to warrant laying double digits to either team. Ball State should be able to keep this one close.
