It's an SEC battle on Saturday afternoon as the Auburn Tigers travel to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The game is slated for a 12:00 pm start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have the Bulldogs as home favorites by a field goal.
The SEC has reigned supreme in college football for nearly the past decade. Today's contest between Auburn and Mississippi State showcases a pair of teams that can obviously continue to improve. Auburn is only a few years removed from a national championship while the Bulldogs have been a middle of the pack type of squad. Auburn dropped its first game of the season to Clemson last week that saw them eclipse the 180-yard plateau in both rushing and passing. However, Clemson and Andre Ellington proved to be too much in the fourth quarter and held on for the win. Auburn at 0-1 is still a scary team. The Bulldogs won their opener, beating up on the Jackson State Jaguars 56-9.
Take from that game whatever you want to, Jacksonville State clearly isn't a powerhouse at all and their nine points didn't really make a difference. But this is a huge game for Mississippi State. Their next two are against Troy and South Alabama, so picking up a win here today would propel them to a 4-0 record, barring an absolute collapse of course.
We've got some crazy things going on in this game. Auburn has won 10 of the 11 in the series and has covered eight of those 10 games. In fact, they haven't been an underdog to Mississippi State since 2000. Interesting for sure. Auburn blew their lead to Clemson in the fourth quarter last week and Kiehl Frazier completed just 11 of 27 passes overall. It's his first road start in the SEC and Starkville can get loud, so he'll more than likely have some problems being away from home. The Tigers haven't lost in Starkville since 2000, winning five straight times.
Free Pick: Hard to go against the Bulldogs here. They are favored for a reason. Auburn lost last week and the first start in the SEC on the road for Frazier could be huge. Plus they are replacing Jonathan Dwyer at running back as he was kicked off the team during the summer. The Bulldogs have a lot of swagger coming in, scoring twice on defense last week and forcing three turnovers. We think they win.
