Northwestern is a great story. For the first time in school history, they are participating in the NCAA Tournament and they certainly earned it, piling up 23 victories and finishing 10-8 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats play slow, but defend well and hold opponents to only 65 points per game on average.
They are led by Bryant McIntosh, he averages better than 14 points per game and hands out more than five assists as well. The Wildcats seem to be a better team when Scottie Lindsey is on the floor, though. He’s an offensive weapon for that at better than 14 points per game and has scored in double digits in each of the last three games for Northwestern, though they ended their run in the Big Ten tournament with a blowout loss to Wisconsin.
Vandy went 19-15 this season. They’re not an excellent team (as evidence by the 15 losses) but they did find a way to beat Florida three separate times this season, which is probably the reason they made the at-large field here.
The Commodores have never won an NCAA Tournament game when seeded lower than eighth. This year Bryce Drew has a team seeded ninth and looking for a win here over Northwestern.
