Free Analysis: Seton Hall has lost only two games - in overtime against Washington and at Louisiana State - and is coming off a one-point win at DePaul in its conference opener. The Pirates have been masters of the tight win lately, taking a 60-59 decision from Stony Brook before toppling DePaul 73-72. Fuquan Edwin made the winning layup with 6.9 seconds left for the Pirates, who last won eight consecutive games Nov. 22-Dec. 23, 2011. They have not been 2-0 on the road in the Big East since a 3-0 start in 1999-2000. Instead of taking a step back following the departures of senior leaders Herb Pope and Jordan Theodore, the Pirates have continued to build on last spring’s NIT appearance by handing the offense over to swingman Fuquan Edwin and guard Aaron Cosby. Edwin averages a team-best 17.7 points but has hit a bit of a slump over the last two contests, totaling 19 points on 7-for-23 shooting (30.4 percent). Edwin was held to seven points on 2-for-9 shooting in the lone meeting with Notre Dame last season - a 55-42 home loss in which the Pirates shot 26.3 percent.
The No. 21 Fighting Irish try for an 11th straight victory Saturday while looking to continue their home dominance over Seton Hall, winner of seven in a row.Playing in the shadows of the school's undefeated football team, Notre Dame (12-1) is one of the nation's hottest basketball teams. The Irish have shot 53.2 percent during their 10-game winning streak. The Fighting Irish lead the nation in assists and rank near the top in field goal percentage thanks to an efficient offense that has averaged 82.6 points over the last five games. The Fighting Irish have been off since Dec. 21, when Jack Cooley collected 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead an 89-67 rout of Niagara. Cooley and fellow senior Scott Martin and juniors Eric Atkins and Jerian Grant have been sharp all through the non-conference slate. Atkins (7.2 assists) and Grant (5.3) are the main facilitators in an offense that averages 19.5 assists and shoots 51 percent from the field. Those two can just dump the ball down low to Cooley, who paces the team in scoring (15.2) and rebounding (11.3).
Free Pick: I will go with the Irish in this one. I know that the Irish have a big game on deck vs Cincinnati, but I feel that Brey will have his team focused. The Irish have won 10 in a row and all have been by at least 10 points. Not all of the games have been cupcakes as their win streak has included wins over Kentucky, Purdue, George Washington and BYU. Seton Hall is off to a nice start, but this is not a team they have fared well vs as the Irish as Notre Dame has won 9 of the last 10 in the series, with the last 3 and 6 of the last 7 wins in the series coming by DD. THis is not a good spot for the Hall as Notre Dame wins by at least 15.
