This should be a solid matchup of strong defensive teams. Gonzaga ranks tops in the country in defensive efficiency rankings, West Virginia enters the game ranked fifth nationally. Neither team will be yielding to the other from an offensive perspective, so this could be one of those games where they beat each other up on the defensive end and offense leaves something to be desired.
The West Virginia press could bring some issues here for the Zags. It’s going to take an effort for Gonzaga in handling the basketball to make this a half-court game so they can get into sets. The Zags are surely a bigger team that will want to pound the interior and work with offensive rebounds.
Gonzaga hasn’t been scoring nearly as much as maybe they should, shooting below 40 percent against South Dakota State and just 44 percent against Northwestern in the next round. Neither one of those teams are strong defensively, so that’s a bit of a concern.
West Virginia has shot 45 and 50 percent in their two games. They’re gaining extra possessions because of the turnovers they create and that’s going to play a major roll in this one here. Gonzaga could be the next No. 1 seed to get knocked out.
