Analysis: Just as No. 13 Creighton was losing its firm grasp of the Missouri Valley Conference, it has taken advantage of the soft underbelly of the league to regain control. The quality of the Bluejays’ opponent will increase substantially on Wednesday as the Bluejays travel to Indiana State. Creighton has won three straight games by at least 14 points against opponents with losing conference records since dropping two in a row on the road. With a victory tonight, Creighton can win 10 league games for the 17th straight season. Only Kansas has a longer streak nationally (18). The top-shooting team in the country at 52 percent, the Bluejays shot 55.1 percent in their first meeting with Indiana State. However, this game begins a stretch of three of four on the road for Creighton against a Sycamore team that has held opponents to a MVC-low 39.3 percent shooting at home. Doug McDermott – the nation’s second-leading scorer – collected his sixth conference player of the week award this season on Monday. His season total matches Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins (1987-88) for the most in conference history.
Indiana State is one victory away from reaching 1,400 all-time. The Sycamores, one of four Missouri Valley teams with a winning conference record, own three victories against opponents ranked in this week’s coaches’ poll despite last month’s loss at Creighton. Indiana State is coming off a 74-71 overtime loss at Drake – the same team that handed Creighton its last loss – but is 8-1 at home. The Sycamores’ Jan. 29 win at then-No. 14 Wichita State snapped a six-game skid to ranked opponents, but they have also recorded neutral-court overtime victories in December over No. 11 Miami and No. 23 Mississippi before either team was ranked. Leading scorer Jake Odum (13.9) figures to play a big role in deciding the outcome of this contest; he has totaled 17 points in two home games against the Bluejays. Odum is 21 points shy of becoming the 35th Sycamore to surpass 1,000 career points.
Free Pick: I like the Sycamores in this one. Earlier in the year the year they lost at Creighton by 13 and now they get them in their own backyard where they are 8-1 on the year. The Sycamores have pulled some surprises this year in winning at home vs Ole Miss, winning on the road at Miami and the their only loss at home this year was in OT vs New Mexico. Oh yeah and they also won by 13 at Wichita State a few days ago. This is a dangerous team and they have won 2 of the last 3 played here between these teams, with that lone loss being by 1 point. This has all the makings of a close game and I expect the outright upset by the Sycamores in this one.
