Free Analysis: The Golden Flashes are riding a five-game winning streak into their final non- conference test. All but one of KSU's victories have been by at least 14 points, but its only contest versus a BCS conference school this season was a 47-14 loss to Kentucky. Coach Darrell Hazell has done a remarkable job of turning around the program, which started 1-6 last season in his first year at the helm. The Golden Flashes have picked up 10 wins in their last 12 games dating back to last season. The Golden Flashes have scored 41 points or more in four games, equaled only by the 1954 team, and produced 31 offensive plays of 20 or more yards. Archer has rushed for 687 yards, averaging 10.1 per carry, and caught 20 passes. Archer has scored 11 touchdowns and thrown for another. Trayion Durham has also run for 649 yards for the Golden Flashes, who have averaged 261.2 rushing in the last three games. Quarterback Spencer Keith has completed 55.6 percent of his passes, helping Kent average 33.7 points. KSU has been improving defensively from week to week. After holding two straight opponents under 20 points, the Golden Flashes forced six total turnovers against Western Michigan last week to help the team overcome a 24-17 deficit.
The Scarlet Knights are just one of 11 remaining undefeated teams in the FBS and are 7-0 for the first time since 2006. Coach Kyle Flood is trying become the first Rutgers coach to start his career out 8-0. The Scarlet Knights have the longest active winning streak in the Big East with eight in a row dating back to last season. Rutgers is coming off of a 35-10 win over Temple in Philadelphia. Rutgers' offense starts with Jawan Jamison, who is the Big East's leading rusher thus far with 779 yards on 177 carries. The sophomore tailback has been consistently great all season with 100 rushing yards or more in six of seven games. In the Scarlet Knights' win over Temple last week, Jamison set a career-high with 81 receiving yards. Quarterback Gary Nova improved to 10-2 as a starter last week and earned the Big East Offensive Player of the Week Award for the second time this season, passing for 232 yards and four touchdowns against Temple. His string of 164 attempts without an interception came to an end in the contest. Nova has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 1,508 yards and 15 TDs with only three interceptions. Rutgers' defense has been the engine to the team's success this season. The Scarlet Knights are ranked third in the FBS in both rushing defense (69.1 ypg) and scoring defense (11.3 ppg). Rutgers has forced 20 turnovers and turned four of them into defensive touchdowns.
Free Pick: Gonna take a stab at the Under in this one. This Rutgers defense has been very good this year allowing just 299 ypg at 4.8 yards per play and just 11.3 ppg. They have allowed a total of 28 points in their last 3 games overall and just 18 total points at home all year. The Kent State defense has improved of late, allowing just 18.3 ppg in their last 3 games and should be able to contain this non-explosive Rutgers offense in this one. The Kent State offense has been superb, but they have’t met this type of defense yet. Should be a low scoring game in this one.
