No. 18 Oklahoma State will test its mettle this evening against the Pac-12’s Arizona Wildcats as the two schools meet for a late night battle in Tucson (10:30pm ET start time, Pac-12 Network). Vegas based and offshore books are siding with the Cowboys in this game as the latest Oklahoma State vs Arizona Odds have Mike Gundy’s squad listed as a -10.5 against the spread road favorite. Rich Rodriguez’ Wildcats are a +320 moneyline play to improve to 2-0 on the season. Tonight’s game total is set at a whopping 70 points.
Rich Rodriguez coaching debut with Arizona was a success on the scoreboard as the Wildcats topped the Toledo Rockets 24-17 in overtime. It was not triumph of efficiency, though. Arizona had no trouble at all moving the ball on Toledo’s defense; it finished the game with 33 first downs and 624 total yards, but three turnovers led to a horrific yards per point average of 26.
Based upon the Cowboys opening weekend performance, Arizona had better play a sounder brand of football tonight if it wants to stay on the field with OSU. Granted, Mike Gundy’s squad faced an FCS school in Savannah State, but an 84-0 final score is always impressive.
Gundy, who is working with a new starting quarterback after Brandon Weeden’s departure to the NFL, barely played his starters in the romp. Freshman signal caller Wes Lunt finished the game 11-for-11 for 129 yards while All American candidate Joseph Randle racked up 107 yards and two touchdowns in just six carries.
Lunt is certain to face more heat against the Wildcats this evening, but all signs point toward the true frosh carrying on the strong quarterbacking play of his predecessors (Zac Robinson and the aforementioned Weeden).
The Cowboys defense will provide Rodriguez’ Wildcats a stiff test as well. Oklahoma State has never been known as a defensive team under Gundy, but coordinator Bill Young, who missed last week’s opener after under going a medical procedure, has his strongest unit since returning to Stillwater four years ago.
Oklahoma State, which is +33 in turnovers since Young returned to the DC post, has eight starters back from last year’s defense, including top tacklers Daytawion Lowe and Alex Elkins.
