The Fresno State Bulldogs will venture into dangerous territory this evening as they face Chip Kelly’s fourth ranked Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium in Eugene (6:30pm ET start time, Pac-12 Network). The latest Fresno State vs Oregon Odds do not like the Bulldogs chances, to say the least, as Tim DeRuyter’s squad is getting 35 points from the hosting Ducks. Not surprisingly, the odds makers envision a lot of crooked numbers going up on the score board in tonight’s game; the Over/Under in this contest is set at 78.5 points.
No LaMichael James? No Darron Thomas? No problem. The Ducks offense looked as formidable as ever with redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota under center. Mariota completed 18-of-22 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in his first start while Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas combined for 12 rushed for 130 yards and three scores in last weekend’s 57-34 win over Arkansas State. Thomas also led the team in receiving with four catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns.
Oregon finished the game with 34 first downs and 605 yards of offense, most of which it racked up in the first half on its way to a 50-10 halftime lead over the Red Wolves.
Fresno State also took care of business in its opener, beating Weber State 37-10 to give new head coach Tim DeRuyter his second career victory (coached Texas A&M to a 33-22 win over Northwestern in the Car Care of Texas Bowl last season).
The Bulldogs looked sharp, producing 515 yards in the victory. Junior quarterback Derek Carr picked up where he left off after a solid sophomore campaign as he completed 20-of-25 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns.
Carr and running back Robbie Rouse (22 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns) should find some success against the Ducks this evening, but, obviously, Fresno State is overmatched in this contest.
Still, 35 points is a massive number and screams back door cover, especially if Kelly takes his foot off the gas like he did in last week’s opener against Arkansas State. Oregon looked as though it would score 90 points in that game had Kelly left his starting offense on the field.
Free Pick: Leaning toward the Over 78.5 points. Fresno, like Arkansas State, figures to do some second half damage on offense while the Ducks should have their way against a defense that allowed over 35 points per game a season ago.
Fresno State vs Oregon Odds:
Fresno State Bulldogs +35 (-110), Over 78.5 (-110)
Oregon Ducks -35 (-110), Under 78.5 (-110)
