The Texas Longhorns are hosting the California Golden Bears in college football action on Saturday night. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Golden Bears favored by almost a touchdown to pick up the win on the road.
Hard to believe just how far Texas has fallen. The Longhorns come into this contest as a near touchdown underdog to California in Austin, but is it really that big of a surprise? There’s a lot of distractions going on inside the Texas athletic program as AD Steve Patterson was just fired this past week. He hand picked Charlie Strong to lead the Texas football program, but how can Strong and his coaching staff feel now?
California can really help their brand with a win in this game on the road. They follow it up by opening Pac 12 play at Washington next week, but a victory here over the Longhorns on national television would certainly be huge for the program.
The Golden bears come in scoring a ton of points, posting 73 over Grambling and 35 last week in a win over San Diego State. Jared Goff has been very impressive at the quarterback position for Cal, having thrown for 630 yards and six touchdowns (three in each game), although he has a pair of picks as well. He should be able to have no problems moving the football against Texas — the Longhorns are giving up better than 273 yards through the air per game this year and almost 500 yards of total offense to opponents Notre Dame and Rice.
The Horns have never lost to California, winning all five matchups in the series, but this really looks like a bad spot for Texas. Taking them as a home dog by around a touchdown seems like a decent idea because should California really be favored by that number, on the road, in their home opener in the state of Texas?
