Bookie Report: NFL Teasers Spank Bookmakers

http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/images/44-esq-sports-book-board-072009-lg-89930242.jpg

With no college football this weekend besides Army/Navy (Army covering for the first time in close to decade in this matchup was good for the bookies), everything was based on NFL. In what seemed like a good day for the bookmakers turned into disaster with the Packers and Chargers covering easily. In the late action, both the public and the sharps were all over the Giants and the books could not attract any Dallas action getting crushed on side, money line and total. Also heard teasers in Sunday NFL were horrible as all the key teams hit and one sportsbook reporting a MINUS 88% house hold on teaser action. Monday did not bode well for the bookies as they needed St. Louis and the under. Now right into the action from this weekend:

Teasers kill the bookies:

"88% hold on teasers yesterday. WTF? On all our NFL teasers yesterday, the house hold was MINUS 88 percent. We had a very bad weekend in NFL – horrible. Teasers absolutely killed us as most covered."
-Oddsmakers from BetOnline

"We were -80% or so off the board, but way, way worse on our teaser cards.  That's a huge part of our business and killed us this time."
-Chris Andrews from Cal Neva

Good, bad and ugly from NFL Sunday:

"The Cardinals upset of the 49ers was the best game of the day for us.  Not only were the public all over the 49ers, so were some of our sharper players."
-Chris Andrews from Cal Neva

"What was shaping up to be an excellent Sunday came crashing down with the 3 late games. Wins and the cover by Green Bay and San Diego proved disastrous for the book. The nail in the coffin came Sunday night with the Cowboys collapse against the Giants. We lost heavily on the sides and total."
-Phill Gray the Line Management Supervisor from Sports Interaction

"I'm going to say the worst game was the Giants.  For some odd reasons, though. When the Cowboys led 34-22 late in the game, we could have escaped for the day. The first Giant TD that cut it to 34-29 was terrible and the final TD that made it 37-34 was salt in the wounds. One more tidbit, before that game we had a big customer who made a large bet on the Giants to win both the NFC crown and the Super Bowl.  A loss to the Cowboys would have virtually eliminated the Giants, but instead they are now the favorite to win the division."
-Chris Andrews from Cal Neva

Tebow factor:

"With the Bronco-Patriot game this week I think we'll write more business than in any game this year.  Tebow is such a lightning rod, people love and hate him.  The same can be said for the Pats.  I can't wait. it should be a huge betting game."
-Chris Andrews from Cal Neva

"The game was a complete push for us on all events, except for the 2nd half total, we had overwhelming heavy action on the under, we cleaned up on that one."
-Phill Gray the Line Management Supervisor from Sports Interaction

"The Tebow comeback and Broncos push stung a bit. Thing is, pushes are never a good thing for us – a no win situation; especially on the three point spread games. So many people buy on/off the 3 that all of them are winners. Also, both sides covered for teasers. So basically we win nothing of pushes, refund a lot and loss a nice sum too."
-Oddsmakers from BetOnline

More Tim Tebow:

Broncos have won 6 straight games.
If you started with $100,
and let it ride
on Denver to win each of the 6 games
you now would have won $38,450!

Next Sunday, Broncos are 6-point home underdogs vs. Patriots.

Prior to being favored Sunday vs. Bears
Broncos were underdogs in prior 5 games
becoming only the THIRD team since 1978
to win 5 straight games as underdogs in each.

Early Bowl action:

"The New Mexico and Idaho Bowls, which play this week are starting to get some business.  Temple and Ohio U are getting the most play.  In later bowl games Southern Miss and Boise St are getting money.  In the games on New Year's Day and beyond Penn St, Oregon, Okla St, Clemson and Alabama are getting the most action."
-Chris Andrews from Cal Neva
