A battle of Top 25 teams in Big East College Basketball action will take place today between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Villanova Wildcats. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the Betting Odds for the game have Villanova favored by almost double digits to pick up the win.
Villanova currently leads the Big East standings with just a couple of losses on the season, but one of those defeats game at the hands of Georgetown. The Hoyas did everything right in that game against the Wildcats, winning by 20 points and completely taking Villanova out of their offensive rhythm. Now the Wildcats will look for revenge over the Hoyas on their own floor in this one.
Jay Wright's team has just two losses this season, but the other one game in overtime at Seton Hall. Villanova is winners of three straight and seven of the last eight stemming from that loss to Seton Hall. They seem to have things figured out at this point, save for the 20-point beat down to Georgetown. The Hoyas shot 51 percent compared to Villanova's 34 percent. The length and athleticism for Georgetown caused Villanova problems, but believe that Wright's team will have many options to attack the Hoyas and the patented zone defenses that John Thompson III likes to run.
Both teams average in the 70s per game offensively, but neither team is great at rebounding, which will be a key in this one.
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Joshua Smith have been played well for the Hoyas, averaging double figures and shooting well. Smith is converting on 64 percent of his shots this season and could cause Villanova some problems on the interior. Smith had just nine points against Villanova the first game, though, in 24 minutes of action, but he did battle fouls.
Villanova, now ranked seventh overall, has just two players averaging double digits as well as Darrun Hilliard II knocks down 13.2 points along with Ryan Arcidiacono's 10 points per game. Four more Villanova players average better than nine points per game and the Wildcats have no problems running out multiple options, with eight players averaging double digit minutes.
The Wildcats will find a way to get this one done, earning some in-season revenge over Georgetown. It should be close, though.
