Big East Basketball Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgetown Hoyas: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Nate Lubick, Talib Zanna

College Basketball on Tuesday night and we will see the Pittsburgh Panthers travel to the Nation's Capital to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 pm (Eastern) start time and will be televised on ESPN U. Currently the odds for the game have Georgetown favored by 2.5 points while the total sits at 115.  Check out Sportsbook Spy to see who the Public is taking on all of today's games.

Free Analysis: Jamie Dixon's Panthers came into league play on an eight-game winning streak, but they are now on a two-game losing slide after falling to Cincinnati (70-61) and at Rutgers (67-62). The loss to the Scarlet Knights was the first true road test of the season for Pitt, which was successful during its non- conference slate due to its stifling defense. The Panthers have the lowest scoring defense in the conference at 53.5 points allowed per contest, and they are sixth on the offensive end of the floor with 73.6 ppg. Pitt trailed by 14 points minutes into the contest vs Rutgers and could not complete a second-half rally in continuing a troubling trend for coach Jamie Dixon's crew, which dropped its first seven Big East games last season and could wind up 0-3 this time around if it gives the same effort against Georgetown. Pitt was led by J.J. Moore's 14 points and Tray Woodall's 11 points and eight assists. Junior forward Talib Zanna paces the team in the scoring column (13.1 ppg) and ranks second in rebounds (5.9) behind freshman seven-footer Steven Adams (6.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg), who has started all 15 games. Woodall, a transfer from CMU, is heating up and now pours in 11.5 ppg.

Georgetown also performed well before entering Big East play as it went 11-1 with the lone setback coming in overtime to the elite Indiana Hoosiers. John Thompson III's squad had a seven-game winning streak before it dropped a 49-48 decision at Marquette in its league opener. The Hoyas are right behind the visitors in scoring defense in the conference, allowing 54.1 ppg, but they are second to last in the league in scoring at a meager 65.1 ppg.  Markel Starks had 18 points and a season-high seven assists in the losing effort Saturday in Milwaukee. Otto Porter Jr. and Whittington had 13 points apiece for the Hoyas, who showed some rust while playing their first game since Dec. 22. Georgetown had only one basket in the final seven-plus minutes. The Hoyas used only seven players and the two that came off the bench - Jabril Trawick and freshman D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera - combined to go 0-for-4 from the floor, 0-for-3 from 3-point range and commit three of the team's 10 turnovers. Starks has made 8 of 14 3-pointers (57.1 percent) over his last four games.

Free Pick: I know that these guys bring the defense, but I will side with the Over here. Sure 8 of the last 10 Hoya's games have gone Under the total, but none of those games were with an OU line this low. Hoya home games have averaged just 16 ppg but allot of that is due to the fact that the Hoya's allow just 51.1 ppg at home. I think this Pitt offense can put at least 7 or 8 more than that on the board in this one. Pittsburgh does average 73.6 ppg on 50.4% shooting on the year and after putting up just 62 points at Rutgers last time out I expect them to bounce back with a better showing tonight. The Panther defense is tops in the Big East, but allot of that was done at home, plus this is now the Big East season and there are no more North Floridas, Bethune Cookmans Delaware States or Kennesaw State's on their schedule. Pitt allowed 43.3 ppg vs those 4 teams, but have allowed 57.8 ppg vs the rest of their schedule and that includes allowing 68.5 pg in their first 2 Big East games. The Hoya's offense is average at 65.1 ppg overall and 64.9 ppg at home, but that should be more than enough for us to get the over in this one. I see both teams in the low 60's in this one.
