The 2013 Belmont Stakes lacks the excitement of a Triple Crown hopeful looking to capture the final jewel, but it certainly isn’t devoid of juicy storylines and an excellent field. The 145th Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday June 8th and will start at 6:20 PM Eastern. As in every race there are a few Longshots and one of them is Vyjack, who has been installed as 20-1 Odds.
Gotham Stakes winner Vyjack made his way to Belmont Park from Aqueduct Friday morning for a likely start in the 145th Belmont Stakes on June 8. Trained by Rudy Rodriguez, Vyjack was 18th in the Kentucky Derby after a third in the Wood Memorial. He began the year by winning the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct.
Monday morning rain prompted trainer Rudy Rodriguez to push back Vyjack’s scheduled breeze to Tuesday. Instead, the gelding galloped 1 ½ miles over the Belmont main track with Rodriguez aboard. The trainer also confirmed that Julien Leparoux will ride the Pick Six Racing color-bearer for the first time in the Belmont Stakes. “He’s a very good rider and has very good hands,” said Rodriguez of Leparoux. “So, hopefully, he’ll be able to get the horse to relax and be at the back of the pack. And, hopefully, he’ll be able to make a move.”
"He's got very, very good energy," Rodriguez said. "We tried to graze him a little bit and he was bucking and kicking. He's been very happy. Maybe he likes Belmont. I hope so. "He looked like he handled the track better than Churchill. He looked a lot more smooth. Over there, he changed leads a couple times, but that track was a little hard for him. He's doing great. Now, we have to hope he brings his 'A' game."
