The West Virginia Mountaineers are taking on the Miami Hurricanes in college football action today in the Russell Athletic Bowl. West Virginia comes into this game ranked 16th in the country, but they are the underdog here. Might have something to do with Miami basically playing a home game here in Orlando, while its about 3.5 hours from campus it still gives the Hurricanes an in-state game.
The Hurricanes went 8-4 in what turned out to be a strange season. They won each of their first four games, then lost four in a row before finally winning their final four games as well. But in those final four games, the Hurricanes really played well offensively in scoring 38 points a game.
Miami played just one game against a ranked opponent all season, falling 20-19 to Florida State. West Virginia has a defense that is a bit under the radar, allowing just over 250 yards per game to Big 12 opponents in what is a pass-happy league. They also played a single ranked opponent and got boat-raced by Oklahoma.
The Mountaineers won 10 games and have several big-play guys at receiver. While none of them have double-digit touchdowns through the air, their top three receivers all have at least 12 yards per catch from QB?Skyler Howard.
West Virginia tailback Justin?Crawford could be a big key here. He’s run for almost 1,200 yards this season and averages 7.4 yards per carry. He scored only four times but had big games on the ground against several key teams, including 331 against Oklahoma and 209 against Baylor.
