The Utah Utes are taking on the Indiana Hoosiers in college football action today in the Foster Farms Bowl. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Indiana made a coaching change as Kevin Wilson was let go in a weird way this off-season. Now the Hoosiers turn to Tom Allen, who was associate head coach under Wilson. Indiana finished the season with a 6-6 record and is clearly going to miss Wilson’s offensive schemes and play calling, it will be interesting to see how much that comes into play during this game.
Allen helped lead the defense to solid improvements for the Hoosiers this season. Indiana is aiming to win its first bowl game since the 1991 season and Utah comes in off a pretty bad end to the regular season.
The Utes lost three of the last four games overall, suffering defeats to Washington,?Oregon and Colorado by a combined 14 points. They can’t be pleased with the 8-4 record on the season and efficiency proved to be a big deal. The Utes ranked just 116th in the country out of 128 teams in red zone efficiency, not being able to cash in touchdowns.
Indiana is actually worse in that category, scoring only 22 touchdowns in 45 trips to the red zone. The up-tempo offense looks to be great from the 20 to 20, but once inside the red zone the Hoosiers really struggled, scoring touchdowns on less than 50 percent of its trips.
Joe Williams piled up almost 1,200 yards on the ground for Utah, he led the team with nine scores on the ground. Utah could also benefit from QB Troy Williams having a big game, he has to be more accurate in the passing game and look to avoid being sacked.
Utah brings a strong pass rush as well, they have 171 sacks the past four seasons, ranking only behind Clemson’s 177 for the best in the country. That pass rush will be big for the Utes tonight.
