The 141st Run For The Roses is takes place this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby official start time is 6:24 pm ET. There are several Contenders in the event, including Mubtaahij, who has been installed as 20/1 Odds to win the Derby.
Mubtaahij's Record: 4-1-0 in 7 Races. Trainer: Mike de Kock. Jockey: Christophe Soumillon. Sire: Dubawi. Dam: Pennegale. Best Beyer Speed: N/A
Mubtaahij has never run on an american track and has drawn the 6th slot at the gate. He is trained by Mike De Kock, who comes in with just 8 career starts and has just 1 win. Mike is an eight times National Champion Trainer in South Africa, Mike has won every major race in his country of birth at least once. He’s won races on four continents in places like England, the USA, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai.
Christophe Soumillon has had 25 career starts, but none this year. He has 3 career wins, but none since 2011. He was raised in a horse racing family and won his first race in November, 1997. In April 2000, Soumillon won five races on the same day, tying the all-time French record. Soumillon was the French champion jockey in 2013, with 207 wins, and has achieved victories in major hurdle races as well.
Not much real info on this horse as he has yet to run on American Soil. His estimated Beyer speed is 97, which is pretty solid. The horse will be the first in a decade to compete in the Kentucky Derby without Lasix, and if he should win, he'd be the first Derby champ since Grindstone in 1996 to be Lasix-free. Lasix is an anti-bleeding medication. Racehorses' pulmonary blood pressure can become four times higher when running, causing capillaries in the lungs to rupture. Let's also note that no horse from Dubia has ever performed well in the Derby. Could Mubtaahij be the first?
