After going 10-4 in 2010, the Miami Redhawks have gone just 8-28 the last years, which includes an 0-12 mark last year. In steps former Notre Dame OC, Chuck Martin, with hopes of turning this program around. It will not be easy despite the fact that they return 50 lettermen, including 15 starters from last year. Preview & schedule are below. Preview & schedule are below.
The offense was pathetic last year, putting up just 9.8 ppg, which was nearly 2 TDs less pg then they put up in their 4-8 season in 2012. New HC Chuck Martin brought with him two pieces from Notre Dame that may help, in QB Andrew Hendrix and TE Alex Welch. Both are slated to start this year and both should help the offense. Hendrix do have the top 3 WRs back from last year, but none of them caught more than 28 passes. That should change also, while the running game should go through more struggles as the top runner last year was QB Austin Gearing. Spencer Treadwell looks to take over as the featured back, but just had 171 yards on the ground last year. The OL has 4 starters back but is still one of the weaker lines in the MAC. The defense allowed 35.7 ppg last year, but should improve this year, with 7 starters back, including top tackler LB Kent Hern, who had 98 stops with 5 TFL and 2 PBUs last year and DE Bryson Albright, who racked up 5 sacks and 6.5 more TFL last year. The secondary looks to be the strength of this defense with 3 starters back including Heath Harding (3 INTs last year) and highly touted Lo Wood, who also has transferred from Notre Dame.
Really hard to find many positives for the Redhawks this year. Getting ND transfer Andrew Hendricks at QB is big, but he can’t do it all himself and that should mean again that Miami will have the worst offense in the MAC. The defense looks to be in a bit better start overall, but still is a bad group, especially in the front 7. Miami is thankful the Umass is in this division or they would be in the basement again. Miami gets UMass at home and should also beat Eastern Kentucky, but no more than 2 wins from this team this year. KEY TREND: 2-10 ATS on the road after allowing 40 or more points.
