Samraat's not only a winner, but he’s a fighter as well. He prevailed in the Withers Stakes after a race-long battle with Uncle Sigh, and he gained the decision in the Gotham after a bitter, three-way stretch duel. Samraat's lone second place finish was at the Wood Memorial back on April 5th and he finished 5th at the Kentucky Derby.
Samraat's sire is Noble Causeway, who earned all three of his career victories at 1 1/8 miles, with graded stakes placings at that distance in the 2005 Florida Derby and 2006 Ben Ali Stakes. Noble Causeway has sired 4 crops of racing age, but Samraat is the only horse that is a United States graded stakes winner. Samraat is the first graded stakes winner out of the winning Indian Charlie mare Little Indian Girl (His Dam), who’s only win came at 1 1/16 miles.
The 19-year-old Ortiz is the younger brother of Irad Ortiz, Jr., another leading rider on the NYRA circuit. He won with his first mount at Aqueduct, Corofin, on March 21, 2012. Ortiz has finished second behind his brother in the Aqueduct inner-track meet jockey standings in each of the past two years, and last September won his first Grade 1 race when he guided Strong Mandate to victory in the Hopeful at Saratoga. Jose Ortiz comes in with 99 wins out of 475 races for the year so far. He is 7th on the 2014 money list earning $5.65 million for the year so far.
