The 146th Belmont Stakes takes place Saturday at Belmont Park in New York. The Belmont Stakesofficial start time is 6:20 pm ET. There are several Contenders in the event, including Tonalist, who has been installed as 8/1 Odds to win the Belmont Stakes.
Tonalist’s Record: 2-1-0 in 4 Races. Trainer: Christophe Clement. Jockey: Joel Rosario. Sire: Tap It. Dam: Settling Mist. Best Beyer Speed: 101
Tonalist is expected to be a real threat to the Triple Crown hopes of California Chrome, but he will have to go along with with his starting gate at #11. The 1 1/2-mile track at Belmont Park won't do these horses any favors, and getting stuck on the outside could be far too physically taxing for this thoroughbred colt. Through four career starts, the bay colt has compiled a record of 2-1-0. Tonalist did win Belmont Park’s traditional prep for the Belmont Stakes, the Grade 2 Peter Pan, by four lengths over Commissioner.
Christophe Clement is the Trainer and was born in Chantilly, France to a racing family, as his grandfather owned horses and his father was a successful trainer as well. He won with the first horse he saddled, Spectaculaire, and just a few months later, he had two Grade 2 victories, with Passagere du Soir, owned by Mr. Paul de Moussac, and Sardaniya, owned by His Highness the Aga Khan. Clement is now 18th on the all-time earnings list among trainers, and campaigned the 2009 and 2010 Champion Grass Horse, Gio Ponti. He was fourth in the 2004 Belmont with Dynever.
Jockey Joel Rosario will ride Tonalist. In 2013, Rosario set a Keeneland spring meet record with 38 winners, won the Dubai World Cup aboard Animal Kingdom, and took his first Classic aboard Orb in the Kentucky Derby. This will be his fourth Belmont Stakes appearance, having finished ninth aboard Make Music for Me in 2010, third aboard Brilliant Speed in 2012, and third aboard Orb in 2013.
