2014 Auburn Tigers Football Preview

The Auburn Tigers had a great year in 2013, as they came out of nowhere to face the Florida State Seminoles in the National Title game, which they lost 34-31. The Tigers are loaded once again and have all the tools to challenge Alabama for supremacy in the SEC West. Preview and Schedule are below.

The offense put up 39.5 ppg last year and may be even more explosive this year, as they have 8 starters back including QB Nick Marshall, who passed for 1976 yards, ran for 1068 yards and accounted for 26 TDs last year. Just think he was actually signed as a DB at Georgia. #1 Juco WR D’Haguille Williams will join Sammi Coates (902 yards receiving and 7 TDs LY) to form a potent duo for Marshall to throw to. The Running game took a hit with the loss of Tre Mason, who ran for 1816 yards and 23 TDs last year. Cameron Artis-Payne and Corey grant look to pick up the last after combining for 1257 yards and 12 TDs last year. Both had impressive yards per carry averages as Artis-Payne had a 9.8 ypc average, while Grant had a 6.7 ypc average.  They will be lining up behind the 2nd best OL in the nation, led by 1st team all –SEC center Reese Dismukes.  The tiger defense was rather average last year after allowing 24.7 ppg, but they do look stronger this year with 6 starters back, including DE Carl Lawson, who had 4 sacks and 3.5 TFL as a freshman last year, LB Cassanova McKinzy, who led the team in tackles and also had 2 sacks, 6 TFL and 1 INT last year, and DB Robinson Therezie, who led the team in INTs with 4. The defense also adds 8 players that were 31st or better coming out of either HS or the Juco ranks.

The Tigers had a magical season last year and the pieces are in place for them to have another big year. Unfortunately they are in the same division as the Alabama Crimson Tide and overtaking them will be tough. Still the tigers will have a big year with an offense that could eclipse 40 ppg and a defense that looks much improved over last year’s squad. Also playing against the Tigers here a little is the fact that they got many lucky breaks down the stretch and that doesn’t usually happen two years in a row. Road games vs Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama will be tough, but they do get LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M at home. This is still a very good team that should win at least 10 games again this year and just may still find a way into the 4 team playoff at the end of the year.   KEY TREND: 8-1 ATS at home after BB SU wins.
