The Appalachian State Mountaineers join the FBS this season and are looking to make an immediate impact. The 2014 Appalachian State Mountaineers Schedule is listed below and features a bunch of winnable games for the newcomers.
Appalachian State opens the season with Michigan, who they beat a couple of seasons ago in Ann Arbor. Odds are the Wolverines will be much better prepared this time around to avoid the monumental upset. But this Appalachian State team isn't nearly as good as they were back then. The Mountaineers were just 4-8 last year and Scott Satterfield's vision to leading this program into a successful winner is in motion. Playing the opening year in the FBS isn't going to be easy.
Marcus Cox won the freshman of the year in the FCS last season, rushing for 1,250 yards on the ground while pounding in 21 total touchdowns. He is going to be a huge impact in the Sun Belt Conference this season whether he can replicate last year's numbers or not. Satterfield was able to put together a recruiting class that has shown some bright spots this season.
Kameron Bryant, junior quarterback, could have a positive impact for the Mountaineers this season as well. If the offensive line, which includes a very good left tackle in Kendall Lamm, can protect him they should be pretty solid this season. Bryant is coming off knee surgery but is expected to by recovered and ready to go with some pass-catching players on the roster.
If the defense can be good as well, Appalachian State can improve. They return a couple of seniors on the defensive line and there are returning players in the secondary, which should help.
But in playing their first full season against FBS schools, it could be a tough season. But, their toughest game of the season will come in the opening week at Michigan. Outside of that, they have road games against Southern Miss, Troy, Arkansas State and Louisiana.
