If the latest round of 2013 World Series Odds is any indication, the race for the championship is a wide open one. The Detroit Tigers, last year’s A.L. Pennant winner, are the current favorite to win the Fall Classic at +900 odds ($100 wins $900), but the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Washington Nationals are all drawing +1000 odds. Close behind that trio is another trio, the Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Francisco Giants, who are listed at +1200 odds apiece.
The Tigers were loaded last year, but still disappointed, somewhat, in the regular season thanks to Max Scherzer’s ugly start and an offense that did not live up to expectations. Still, Detroit won the A.L Central and, eventually, the A.L. Pennant. With Anibal Sanchez and Torii Hunter joining the fold (rejoining in Sanchez’ case), the Tigers appear, at least on paper, capable of doing the same thing this year.
Detroit should have plenty of competition, though, as the Angels and revamped Blue Jays have no shortage of weapons as well.
In the National League the odds makers are, understandably, expecting the Nationals and Dodgers to lead the charge, but the Reds and defending champion Giants could spoil the party. All four clubs have great pitching and their sticks aren’t too shabby either.
