The NFL season is all of five weeks old, but 2013 Super Bowl Odds have changed dramatically from those issued during the preseason. Previous favorite Green Bay is now an eighth pick to win the Lombardi Trophy (+575 to +1600) while the Houston Texans, a +1250 moneyline play ($100 wins $1250) before the season kicked off, are now a +350 favorite to claim the franchise’s first ever NFL championship. The San Francisco 49ers are a second pick, along with the New England Patriots, at +450 odds while the Falcons are a +700 moneyline selection.
Houston Texans (+350): The Texans are off to a 5-0 start and they look like the class of the NFL thus far; however, it should be noted the combined record of Houston’s first five opponents is a lackluster 8-17. Are the Texans impressive? No doubt, but the next game four weeks should prove even more telling with Packers, Ravens, and Bears all on the schedule.
San Francisco 49ers (+500): The 49ers took some of the luster off their early shine with a stunning road loss to the Vikings, but their two most recent performances have more than made up for that lapse. San Francisco fields one of the league’s top defenses and its offense is both efficient and productive. That combination, obviously, gives Jim Harbaugh and his team a shot at securing the Lombardi.
Atlanta Falcons (+700): Prior to the season’s start it would have been difficult to convince most football fans the Falcons had a legitimate championship shot; now, not so much. Atlanta is off to a franchise best 5-0 start and three of its wins have come on the road. The most intriguing part thing about this team: its defense. While they are not a shut down unit, the Falcons opportunistic nature provides an excellent compliment to its potent offense.
New England Patriots (+600): The Patriots are an uncharacteristic 3-2 and they have a highly unusual home loss, but no one doubts what kind of damage this team can do. Buffalo can testify to the dangers New England poses as Tom Brady and company scored four fourth quarter touchdowns in a 52-28 win at Ralph Wilson Stadium two weekends ago. Denver can testify to the Patriots potency as well. New England posted 35 first downs and 444 yards against a Bronco defense that has, for the most part, played well this season.
