The 2013 Preakness Stakes will feature a lighter than usual field, which means a colt like Mylute could steal the spotlight on Saturday. The son of Midnight Lute, itself a product of 1998 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Real Quiet, showed well at the Derby, creating some hope among the colt’s handlers that it can upset the favored Orb. Bookmakers like Mylute as well; the latest 2013 Preakness Stakes Odds have the colt listed as a second pick to the aforementioned Orb at +500 moneyline odds ($100 wins $500).

 

Mylute has experienced varying results throughout his 10 race career, but most of them have been good. The colt has only finished off the board on three occasions and one of those came two weeks ago at the 139^th Kentucky Derby.

 

Despite not placing at Churchill Downs, Mylute finished at respectable fifth at the Triple Crown event, stirring some Preakness optimism from jockey Rosie Napravnik.

 

“The horse ran great and the best part is I think he’s really going to move forward off of this and I’m looking forward to his next race,” said Napravnik following the Derby. “He really is the right type of horse for these classic distance races and I’m really excited about his next race because he’s really growing into a very nice racehorse.”

 

‘Growing’ is the operative word, though, as Mylute has yet to win a graded stakes race. The colt, which will start from Post-5 on Saturday, owns two career victories and those came in its maiden race and an Allowance race.   

 

The 138^th running of the Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday, May 18^th at the Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland. The event is scheduled to get underway at 4:30pm ET and will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network.
