The Atlanta Falcons close out their 2013 NFL Preseason slate tonight with a showdown against a team most consider the worst in the league, the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, despite that near consensus, the latest NFL Odds have the Jaguars listed as a -2.5 against the spread road favorite in this evening's contest. Kickoff in tonight's game, which features a 40 point total, is scheduled for 7:30pm ET at the Georgia Dome.

There is no question which of these two teams would win in a regular season matchup, but the preseason is another story, especially considering Mike Smith's exhibition track record.

Atlanta is 7-16 straight up and 10-13 against the spread in preseason games with Smith as head coach and they are 0-3 in both categories this year.

Last week the Falcons built a 6-0 first quarter lead against the Titans but they headed into the break down 13-6, despite Matt Ryan playing the entire first half. The final result was a 27-16 Tennessee victory, but it is safe to assume Atlanta did little fretting on its trip back to the Peach State.

They will probably feel the same this evening should the lose to the Jaguars, and, frankly, that outcome seems likely.

Tonight's game means far more to Jacksonville, which could use a little confidence heading into next week's season opener against the Chiefs.

Starting quarterback Blaine Gabbert is out with a thumb injury, but his snaps would have been limited anyway. The same is true for veteran backup Chad Henne, who may play a series or two.

The bulk of the snaps will go to third year pro Mike Kafka and rookie Matt Scott. Those two are battling for the third string spot, and a poor showing for either player could result in the proverbial ax.
