2013 NBA Finals Odds

With the 2012-2013 NBA season nearing its halfway point a handful of teams have begun to separate themselves from the pack. Most of those squads are the usual suspects, but there are some surprises, including the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks. According to the latest 2013 NBA Finals Odds the defending champion Miami Heat are favored to retain their crown at +175 odds ($100 wins $175) while last season’s runner-up, the Oklahoma City Thunder, are drawing +300 odds ($100 wins $300). The aforementioned Clippers are a third pick at +400 odds. The San Antonio Spurs and Knicks round out the top five favorites at +700 and +800 odds, respectively.

Miami Heat (+175): The Heat, at 23-9, currently owns a three game lead over the Atlanta Hawks in the Southeast Division, but no one is concerned about Miami winning the division. What may be prompting a bit of concern, though, is the Heat’s play at the defensive end of the floor. Miami, obviously, has plenty of time to get things corrected, but right now it is a middle of the pack defensive unit, giving almost 98 points per game.

Oklahoma City Thunder (+300): The only reason Miami is still favored to win it all is the result of last year’s NBA Finals. Were it not for the Heat’s dominance in last season playoffs, the Thunder would easily top the odds board. OKC is 26-7 overall and, despite the loss of James Harden, is still, arguably, the best offensive team in the league.

Los Angeles Clippers (+400): The Clippers, if they can stay healthy, have enough talent to pose a serious threat to both the Heat and Thunder. Los Angeles has overcome some of the problems that derailed it in the past, and it has been a force both at home and on the road (27-8 overall, 17-3 home, 10-5 road). The Clippers can also get it done at both ends of the floor as evidenced by their top third ranking in both points per game (101.9) and points per game allowed (93.1).
