The SEC is once again the king of the college football landscape this season and the Florida Gators believe they have a legitimate shot at being a BCS caliber team. The 2013 College Football Predicitions have the Gators at 32/1 to win the BCS Championship game and they're being considered one of the teams that will make some noise in the SEC this fall.
Florida went 11-2 a season ago and lost to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl. Yet, if you look closer at their overall squad we see Florida was 10th best in the SEC in scoring last year (26.5 ppg) and they were 12th in total offense, with 334.4 yards per game. Passing-wise they were terrible, connecting for just 146.4 yards per game through the air. Yet, they won 11 games. Steve Spurrier is no longer in Gainesville and the years past when Florida was one of the best offensive clubs in the country is long gone. But maybe they don't have to be that spectacular offensively. Will Muschamp enters his third year as the head coach of the Gators and he's won 18 games during those first two years.
The Gators have no played in the SEC Championship game since the 2009 season. This year they won't play Alabama (unless it's in the SEC title game). But they do have a pretty brutal schedule, having to play at Miami early in the season, back to back games in October on the road against LSU and Missouri and don't forget the November 16 battle at South Carolina plus the season finale with Florida State coming to town. That's a lot of games where the defense is going to have to show up huge and get the Gators through if the offense continues to struggle.
Last year Florida's defense ranked second best in the conference in total yards, rushing yards and points allowed. But they did lost quite a bit to the NFL Draft. They have holes on the defensive line and in the secondary. They might be able to get through September unblemished if their youngsters can grow up on the defensive side of the ball but once October comes around Florida is going to have to be excellent on defense, because their offense isn't going to get them to the SEC title game.
