Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas had three entries in the 2013 Preakness Stakes, but he is sending two horses to the Belmont Stakes, the Unbridled’s Song sired Will Take Charge and Pimlico winner Oxbow. Will Take Charge, which is seeking a second graded stakes victory, is not expected to garner Lukas his third Belmont win, though. The latest 2013 Belmont Odds have Will Take Charge among the longshots at +2000 on the moneyline ($100 wins $2000).
The well raced Will Take Charge needed two races to break his maiden, but since doing so last October, the colt has recorded just two wins in seven races.
Will Take Charge won the one mile Smarty Jones in January and it earned its first graded stakes win, the 1 1/16 miles Rebel Stakes (G2), prior to its Kentucky Derby run.
Will Take Charge did not fair well at Churchill Downs, though, taking seventh place in the 139th Run for the Roses. Despite that result, Lukas took the colt to Pimlico; however, it did not perform any better in the Preakness, again taking seventh only this time in a nine horse field.
Those lackluster results, in addition to a sixth place finish in the Southwest Stakes (G3) and a 13th place run in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), have few believing in a Will Take Charge surprise in tomorrow’s Belmont.
The 145
th running of the Belmont Stakes will take place on tomorrow in Elmont, New York. The final leg of the
Triple Crown Series gets underway at approximately 5:00pm ET; it will be broadcast live on the NBC and the NBC Sports Network.
