Maria Sharapova, fresh off her first major championship since 2008, is a co-favorite to win the 2012 Wimbledon women’s singles championship. 2012 Wimbledon Odds have Sharapova and four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams tabbed as 11-4 ($100 to win $275) favorites in the season’s third major. Wimbledon, which takes place at the All England Club in Wimbledon, England, is scheduled to get underway on Monday, June 25th. Sharapova is the top seed in the tournament while the WTA’s No. 2 player, Victoria Azarenka, is the two seed. Williams, who opens the tournament against the Czech Republic’s Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, is the sixth seed.
Maria Sharapova, who now sits atop the WTA’s women’s singles rankings, waited a long time to complete a career grand slam, but she did it nonetheless, winning the 2012 French Open earlier this month. Sharapova defeated Italy’s Sara Errani in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to secure her first French Open title and her first major championship since winning the Australian Open in January of 2008.
The Russian’s Roland Garros victory marked her third singles title of the season as she secured tournament wins at Stuttgart and Rome prior to her arrival in Paris.
Sharapova, who won her first major at Wimbledon, is seeking her first championship at the event since winning it in 2004.
Serena Williams, who now holds the sixth spot in the WTA hierarchy, has had a solid season, but first round ouster at the French Open raised a few eyebrows. Most expect Williams to rebound at the All England Club, though, despite her fourth round dismissal at last year’s Wimbledon. Williams won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in 2009 and 2010 and she reached the finals there in 2008. Williams also won back-to-back titles at Wimbledon in 2002 and 2003.
