2012 U.S. Open Final Round Odds Update: Jim Furyk Favored

The third round of the 112th U.S. Open ended with 2003 and 2012 U.S. Open winners Jim Furyk and Grame McDowell sitting atop the leader board. Both players are one under par heading into today’s final round, but it is Furyk the odds makers like most to win the event. The former Arizona golfer is drawing 9-4 odds ($100 to win ($100 to win $225) in a 2012 U.S. Open Final Round Odds Update while McDowell is registering at 5-2 odds ($100 to win $250) to capture his second U.S. Open title in three years. Tigers Woods, the pre-tournament favorite and the favorite going into yesterday’s round, is now a 12-1 play to win his 15th major. Woods is currently five shots off the lead with a four over par 214.

Jim Furyk spent a large part of yesterday’s back nine in scramble mode, but unlike his playing partner, Tiger Woods, Furyk managed to preserve his score and head to the clubhouse with an even par 70. The 2003 U.S. Open champion, who has three top 10 finishes this year, hit bogies on holes one, five, and 16, but he countered those efforts with birdies on seven, 11, and 17.

Graeme McDowell shot on bogey on the ninth, but his play on the back nine was far less precarious than Furyk’s as he notched birdies on holes 10, 13, and 18 to give him a share of the lead. McDowell, who shot a two over 72 on Friday, is one of just two players, Ernie Els being the other, to finish under par in at least two of the first three rounds of play.

Tiger Woods day got off to a horrific start as he bogeyed four of the first eight holes; it ended miserably as well with Woods hitting bogies on holes 16 and 18 to enter the clubhouse with a five over par 75. Woods began the third round with a share of the lead, sitting at one under par. Since Woods never trailed in winning his first 14 majors, it seems unlikely that a comeback would be in order today. Although, anything is possibly at this Olympic Club course.

Other contenders include the aforementioned Els (15-1 odds to win his third U.S. Open title), Lee Westwood (6-1 odds), the world’s third ranked player, and amateur Beau Hossler (100-1). Els and Westwood are both sitting at two over par for the tournament while Hossler is a three over 213.
