2012 Olympics Odds and Picks: Overall Medals

The 2012 Olympics officially get underway Friday, July 27th in London, England. This year’s games will feature over 204 countries; however, if the latest 2012 Olympics Odds and Picks are any indication, only a handful of nations have a realistic shot at winning the overall medals count. The favorite to do so at Sportsbook.ag is the United States at -400 odds ($400 to win $100). USA won the honor at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, garnering 110 medals, including 36 gold medals. China, which won the most gold medals in Beijing (51) and finished the 2008 games with 100 medals, is a second pick at +500 odds ($100 to win $500). Russia and Australia are third and fourth picks, respectively, at +1000 and +5000 odds while host Great Britain is drawing +8000 odds to win the overall medals count.

The United States dominated a number of events in 2008 and it is expected to remain strong in most of those areas in London, giving it an edge over China, its biggest competition in Beijing.

The following are just a few of the areas most pundits anticipate the USA outpacing the rest of the world at the London Games: Men’s Basketball (won gold in 2008), Women’s Basketball (won gold in 2008), Men’s 400 meter (won gold, silver, and bronze in 2008), Men’s 400 meter hurdles (won gold, silver, and bronze in 2008), Men’s 4x400 meter relay (won gold in 2008), Women’s 4x400 relay (won gold in 2008), Women’s Soccer (won gold in 2008), Men’s Swimming (won gold in the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke, 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter butterfly, 200 meter individual medley, 400 meter individual medley, 4x100 meter freestyle relay, 4x200 meter freestyle relay, 4x100 medley relay).
