The third major of the tennis season is rapidly approaching with the Wimbledon Championships scheduled to get underway on Monday, June 25th at the All England Club in Wimbledon, England. 2012 Wimbledon Odds have last year’s champion, Novak Djokovic, listed as a 5-4 favorite ($100 to win $125) to successfully defend his crown. The ATP’s No. 2 player, Rafael Nadal, is drawing 9-4 odds ($100 to win $225) to win his third Wimbledon title while Roger Federer is listed at 9-2 odds ($100 to win $450) to secure a seventh Wimbledon championship.
While Novak Djokovic currently ranks as the No. 1 men’s singles player, he is coming off his third consecutive loss to Rafael Nadal. Nadal defeated the Serbian at Rome and Monte Carlo prior to their finals meeting at Roland Garros two weekends ago. All of those matches took place on clay, though, a surface which Nadal owns when healthy.
The Spaniard has not overcome Djokovic on anything other than a clay surface since the 2010 Barclays World Tour Finals in London (hard). Only three of the pair’s 33 career meetings have come on grass and two of those came at Wimbledon. Their most recent grass meeting took place at last year’s Wimbledon final with Djokovic winning in four sets 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
It may seem a bit premature to crown one of these two the 2012 Wimbledon champion, but before placing any wagers on this year’s event consider that Nadal has appeared in eight of the last nine major championship finals, winning five of them. Djokovic has made it to finals in six of the last seven major championships; he won four of them.
The last player besides Nadal or Djokovic to win a major was Roger Federer, who won the 2010 Australian Open.
