Just when we thought this years Triple Crown wouldn't have any excitement as no one believes that 50-1 shot Kentucky Derby Winner Mine That Bird has a shot at winning the Triple Crown a filly may save the day. Rachel Alexandra may be taking on the boys on Saturday. She is clearly the best 3 yr old filly in the country and many believe after her impressive win in the Kentucky Oaks that she may just be the best 3 yr old in the country period.

In fact she is so impressive that if she is indeed entered in the Preakness on Saturday Kentucky Derby Winning Jockey Calvin Borel will jump off of Mine That Bird to ride Rachel Alexandra. This would be the first time in history that the winning jockey of the Kentucky Derby would jump to ride another horse in the Preakness. That's how good Rachel Alexandra is.

The fact that most of the Kentucky Derby Favorites finished so poorly and a 50-1 shot won leaves the Preakness wide open. Personally I'm not a fan of racing a filly against the colts as generally the outcome is not good. As a horse owner myself I have had to make that decision a few times myself and I always decided against it. I must admit for the good of the sport this is monumental as Horse Racing has been dying for a super star to save the sport. Horse Racing is a great sport but it's losing it's fan base. Sure we have had some shots at a Triple Crown Winner in the last decade but we never had that Super Star Horse that everyone knew their name. To me the last true super star of the sport was Cigar. That was a horse that went everywhere and took on the best and his winning streak may never again be matched at the level of races he was running in.  I had the pleasure of seeing Cigar up close and personal at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington and it was a day I will never forget.

Rachel Alexandra gives the sport a story as the filly takes on the boys. No this is not Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs it's better. Rachel Alexandra is what we refer to as a freak and trust me when I call her a freak, that's the highest compliment you can give a horse.

For the sake of Horse Racing let's hope Rachel does run in the Preakness as it will grab everyone's interest and if she pulls off the Win the sport may indeed have the super star it's been searching for.
