Republican Megadonor Miriam Adelson Is Leading a Push for Gambling in Texas (msn.com)
This article is promising news...though I'll believe it when I see it!
There are a few impediments here in Texas. First, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who controls legislation in the State Senate, has been pretty adamant against gambling in the past. But he may be softening...with so much other bi-partisan support...and so much money filling his campaign bank account from Miriam Adelson and Tilman Fertitta. Second, gambling is prohibited by the Texas Constitution. So if the State Legislature approves and Gov. Abbott signs, voters then need to pass a Constitutional amendment. This article indicates voters probably would approve such an amendment overwhelmingly. Finally, for those who aren't familiar with Texas government...our legislature only meets every other year. (in odd-numbered years)...for 150 days (basically through Memorial Day). So if the Legislature and Governor can't get something done by the end of May...it will have to wait until 2025.
