Ferocious is down to run in the G1 Hopeful Stks,

Date 09/02/2024, / Track: Saratoga Race Course

Distance: 7 f (Dirt)

Age / Sex: 2 M

Was expecting him to move up in grade, but Gustavo Delgado has entered him into the Hopeful. A Grade 1 for 2 year olds, over 7f and back at Saratoga were he won his maiden. It will be Interesting if he runs and how he gets on in a Grade 1.

Saratoga 02 Sep 2024 -- Race 10 - Hopeful Stakes - Grade 1

Here are some of the horse's that have won the Hopeful Stakes: Forte in 2022, Gunite in 2021 and Jackie's Warrior in 2020. So we are talking top class horse's that win this race and Ferocious is going to run in it. If Ferocious wins here and he is 8/5 Morning Line fav for the race, that will open the door of a Breeders Cup 2024 Juvenile run or even the dream of spring 2025 begins. But he has to win. These are only 2 year olds and anything can go wrong with them, we just have to take a look at Fierceness in the champagne Stakes. Fingers crossed on Monday and hope that Ferocious can run a big race and get us a win. And the Dream will continue.

#3 Innovator - Placed twice in three starts. Beaten by Sandman when second of seven at 13-8fav LTO at Saratoga over 7f last month. 

#4 Tough Catch - Half-brother to Friar Laurence, won five times at 5f and 7f. A winner at 13-2 at Saratoga over 5f LTO in July, beating Innovator by 3/4l. 

#5 Smoken Wicked - A winner at 4f. Third of eight behind Showcase beaten 3 1/2l at 11-2 LTO at Saratoga over 6f last month. Should be on the scene.

#6 Studlydoright - Successful at 4f and 5f. Beaten 1l by Mo Plex when second of seven at 13-8fav LTO in the Group 3 Sanford Stakes - Grade 3 at Saratoga over 6f in July

#7 Mentee - Full brother to Fierceness, and Won LTO when 11-20jt-fav at Belmont At The Big A over 5f in June, beating Colloquial by a short head. 

#8  Chancer Mcpatrick - Half-brother to Split Decision, won at 1m. Won on his latest outing when 9-4fav at Saratoga over 6f in July, beating T Kraft by 1l. Worthy of consideration.

#9  Incentive Pay - Half-brother to Bargaining Power, Won on his latest outing when 13-5fav at Saratoga over 6f in July, beating Dapper Moon by 2 1/2l. Isn't out the reckoning.

2024 Hopeful Stakes Result

Ferocious go's off odds on fav, Broke well enough to sit behind the pace setters. They went a decent pace up front. Ferocious sat in 3rd down the back stretch. turning for home it look like the horse was beginning to tire, as he lost his balance and Irad had to get aggressive on him. In the stretch, Chancer McPatrick came outside of Ferocious who looked like he was stalled in upper stretch. But Ferocious, under Irad Ortiz Jr., re-engaged when Chancer McPatrick came outside of him, but his late run fell a half-length short.

“Turning for home, I started working on him, he lost a little focus, so I went a little aggressive on him but he didn’t really give it to me until that horse got close to me,” said Ortiz, who was subbing for an injured Javier Castellano. “When that horse got outside of me, he turned his engines on to be honest.”

According to Ramiro Restrepo, who represents part of the ownership group, Ferocious lost his left front shoe in the race.

Snap's Verdict

Ferocious ran well for his 2nd run on the track, although it was disappointing to see him stall at the top of the home stretch, With him losing a shoe and getting a different Jockey on him, but by the way he rallied back at Chancer McPatrick was encouraging. He got a 86 beyer figure for the race and this race will hopefully teach him a lot and he will come on for it, as I believe there is still more improvement to come from him. The time looks good as it is up to standard with other pass Hopeful Stks winners. He was also 1sec+ faster then any other 7f Dirt race on the card. Were he go's next could be the Champagne Stakes (G1) in Saratoga around the start of October, I would like to see a rematch. But that's up to the trainer.
