Ok here are my thoughts on this game.
First to Steve-O - I completely disagree with you that if the weather were better last week, the Rams would have beat the Eagles. I can come up with several plays that if the Eagles would have made, they would have blown this game out moreso than they did.. its pointless to even discuss this at this point because at the end of the day the eagles won. Period, end of discussion.
Now to the game.
Let me just comment on the Commanders and the hype around this team right now. Jayden Daniels has been playing very well for a rookie, i'll give him that, but lets just take look at the Commanders' last two games:
1) In WC round, Commanders play TB who has the 29th ranked passing defense in the league. Some may argue that if not for the fumble giving Washington the ball in the redzone for a go-ahead score, TB should have coasted to the victory here. TB prior to the fumble had come off two straight 10 play 70+yard drives that ended in touchdowns. Washington did what they had to do and won the game, moving on...
2) In the Divisional round vs Lions, all the hype was on the Lions to smoke the Commanders, rookie had no business going into Detroit and winning this game. But if you step back and really examine the way the game played out.. it was a perfect storm for the Commanders to dominate. First, you have the Lions with the 30th rank passing defense and a group that is decimated with injuries. Second, you have the very frequent Goff meltdown game with multiple turnovers. We'll give credit for the Commanders with rising to the occasion, but by watching that game and the way the script was playing out..it turned into a perfect storm to benefit Commanders. Jayden played well, but at the end of the day you had screen passes that were going for 80 yard TD scores against this decimated Lions Defense.
I think the hype on Jayden Daniels is way overblown right now due to the fact that Commanders matched up with two of the worst passing defenses in the NFL. This week he is going to run into a buzzsaw:
Few things stand out to me about this game:
- Eagles are the #1 pass defense in the NFL. #2 overall total defense per PFF. THis is not the Bucs and this is damn sure not the Lions.
- This game will be at the Linc in a NFC championship environment. (good luck with that)
- This will be the 3rd time Eagles are facing Jayden Daniels. He will not catch Vic Fangio and this team by surprise. The team has seen his speed and will develop a gameplan to contain him.
- Commanders have a weak rush attack. (Brian Robinson averaging 3.3 YPC)
- Commanders suffer a massive loss to their OL, losing Sam Cosmi (RG) to a torn ACL. Expect Jalen Carter to dominate the back-up.
- Commanders have two key injuries on their interior defense that are very concerning - Daron Payne and Bobby Wagner both missing from Wednesday practice. Wouldnt be surprised if they play, but not a good sign.
- Quinyon Mitchell expected to play. Was a participant in practice and expects to be fully ready to play. Now, i do believe there is some inherent risk on how healthy Quinyon will be , but at the moment he is trending toward full participant. He has held Mclaurin to lines of 1/10/0 and 5/60/1 over the two games they played this year. Effectively neutralizing Scary Terry.
- This is a revenge game for Ertz. Ertz is sure handed and i expect him to be a threat.
- Washington will struggle against this Eagles OL and run game. Washington ranks among the bottom of NFL against the run, i believe 28th or 29th. Lions were running the ball at 8.7YPC against them and somehow decided to deviate from this approach. Eagles will not deviate, they will run early and often
Simply put.. The eagles are better team all around, they are now familiar with Jayden Daniels and his amazing skillset, but the Eagles are no Lions or Buccaneers.
Now i would be remiss if i did not mention the concerns floating around the eagles side of the ball:
- What will is Quinyon Mitchells health status? It is of major concern if Quinyon is not available for this game. He is a lockdown corner and
- What is Jalen Hurts health status? How effective will he be in the run game, which has a massive impact on the teams overall run approach. I think that Jalen Hurts will be prepared and healthy enough to play and run the ball this week. Last week after his injury scare, it seemed that his mobility may have been hampered due to the injury, but i believe the conditions had a large impact on his approach in the 2nd half. 1st half was light flurries and a less slick field, and the 2nd half the heavy snow began to fall creating very difficult conditions to run. I think the lack of mobility in second half was largely due to the conditions and not a result of his inability to move due to the injury. Just my thought after rewatching the game, but we will see on Sunday.
Personally - with or without Jalen Hurts i believe the Eagles should win this game decisively.
My bets.
Eagles - 5 or -6 (whichevre line you get) -- I have Eagles -6 on my books and i've locked this in for several units already. This is a large play for me, probably 4-5 units for me.
Bonus Bets. These are mostly for fun, so bet responsibily).
-Over 47.5 (I see this game being 33-23; 34-24..something in this range).
-AJ Brown ATTD
-AJ receptions (ov 4.5), yards (over 50), and ATTD. parlay.
-AJ First TD (for a goof). (+900)
-Under rushing for Jayden. Not sure where the line is on this, but if you can bet the alt under 60/70, i'd take it. We will have a plan to contain his run.
Have fun.. Good Luck.. Do what you gotta do. If you dont like agree with me, great, if you do agree with me, great. Its your money do with it what you will.
GOD BLESS
