Apparently special teams don't matter to the Packers. They haven't fixed them in years. Just hired not-up-to-the-task special team coaches and ignored the problem.
Here's some Packers history. The Packers won the NFL championship in 1961 and '62 under Vince Lombardi. They won the 1965, 1966 and '67 championships, too, under Lombardi, who retired as Green Bay's head coach following the 1967 Super Bowl victory over the Raiders.
So what kept the Packers from also winning the NFL championship in 1963 and 1964? The Packers didn't have superstar Paul Hornung in 1963. He was suspended for the entire season. Also Bart Starr was injured and had to miss the final games of the season, including a crucial showdown against the Bears. The Bears won the NFL title that year with a great defense, one of the best of all-time that today is overshadowed by their 1986 defense.
The Packers should have won the NFL title in '64, but their kicking game was abysmal. They made just 12 of 51 field goals! That was 23.5 percent. This was before soccer style kickers. It was harder to make field goals back then, but missing 39 of 51 field goals even by those standards was just insane.
So what did Lombardi do? He went out during the off-season and got Don Chandler, a real pro. The Packers didn't have a kicking problem after that under Lombardi. The Packers drafted Travis Williams in 1967. He was the greatest kick returner in Packers history.
What I'm trying to say is if there was a problem, special teams or otherwise, Lombardi fixed it. It was a priority. He didn't sit around like the Packers have for the past years with their God Damn special teams issues. He addressed the problem and took care of it.
Now it's too late.
