Lived here in Titletown 32 of my 34 years. I know, I know, I'm a foolish millennial that doesn't know what it's like....70s and 80s, yada yada Dan Devine Forrest Gregg blah blah. I get it.
When the Packers beat the Steelers on Christmas Eve 1995 for the first division title in 20+ years, I was watching. Next year, first Super Bowl since Lombardi. The town was so Packers crazy, I'll never forget it. Incomparable to times since. Part of childhood education was to be an expert on everything Packers, present and past. I'm quite aware of the "suffering" and alternative to life without Favre/Rodgers.
Comparing those two, to get past that right away here, is absolutely silly. The NFL that Favre won MVPs in is basically a different sport than what Rodgers has been playing most of his career. The natural violence once expected and accepted as part of the game has been actively phased out over the last decade or so, particularly involving the QB. For all intents and purposes, the defense can barely hit the pass thrower anymore without severe penalty.
The argument against Gutey for his recent drafts (including the one 3 days old!) is absurd. Everyone knows, including you Nover, you need to give it 3 years before judging a draft. Pretty ballsy to call Love "the worst"...he literally hasn't even taken a snap in the NFL yet. RIDICULOUS. Won't even acknowledge the topic beyond that.
I could go on for 30 paragraphs about how it’s time for this marriage to end, but I’ll keep it to a few.
The Packers, you might know, were around before the Precious one came to town. They’ll be long after too. Some sports orgs might think it’s a great idea for a player to have say in the operations of the team. The Packers aren’t one, and never ever will be. This is not the joke called the NBA. LeBron is a poor comparison (although a similarly distasteful narcissist).
Precious has been going down the Uber Diva path for a long time now. Clearly this off-season he’s decided to take it to level 11. The wannabe Hollywood celebrity and his moronic girlfriends. His constant propensity to make endless public snide and passive aggressive comments, only to turn around, deny them and then bitch and cry the media asks him about them. The on field Cutler esque body language when things aren’t going well. Oh yes, and when they are not, it is NEVER, his fault. EVER. He and he alone is responsible for all good that has happened to the Packers since 2008, and none of the bad. Every win, his and every loss, on McCarthy, or the D, or “no first round receivers” (what a fing joke that one is), or LaFluer, or the cat, the dog, the paint on the walls...
Ah, yes. The latest one being the most recent in the run of playoff losses. Not his fault whatsoever! Especially when he went 0-6 inside the 10 with the game on the line, including passing up the wide open path to run for the pylon. Instead he threw an 0-2 count slider into the dirt. I can think of a certain QB that made those runs time and time again, without regard for his body.
The roster is stacked with talent, and when his contract is gone and the kings ransom is acquired, it’ll get even better. The only regret I and a great number of realistic Packers fans will have, is that the Precious one won’t take all his knobshiner fans with him. Reminds me of the movie Semi Pro, when that guy cheers on Mannix banging his wife.
And he will be gone. Believe it or not, the Packers aren’t going to compromise their entire successful operations for a 37 year old complete Diva player that is holding them hostage for unexplainable reasons. Sticking to that mantra is what will keep them successful for another 20+ years.
