One of the most difficult things I find in capping is finding a team that's usually the underdog and one that you think can keep the game close and a most importantly a one goal game and betting on the +1.5 puck line at better odds than betting on the favorite.
In this case with the Avs as you posted, it does not make any sense to bet on that moneyline and even the puck line. For example -220 on the -1.5 PL is way too much juice to play. You are better off not betting on a game like that instead of taking a huge chance.
The other thing to consider is the 60-minute/3-way line if your sportsbook offers that. You get better odds but at the expense of losing the bet if the game goes into overtime.
Try to avoid the clear favorites in a huge one-sided matchup as it could be a big spoiler in the end. Consider over/unders instead of betting on the favorites as well. O/U odds are usually not far from even, such as -105, -110, or -115, and even plus odds in some instances.
Remember, a bet not placed is a bet not lost.
