Problem Gaming Awareness Month
|
In addition to being one of the most exciting periods on the sports calendar, March is also Problem Gaming Awareness Month. This critically important annual campaign looks to increase awareness about gaming-related mental health challenges, while promoting prevention, treatment and recovery services.
|
Splash Sports is proud to be a champion of Responsible Gaming and has partnered with Birches Health to offer dedicated resources, content and support. Birches has shared some common signs of problem gaming that all should be aware of, so you can keep an eye out for them in yourselves and others.
|
-
Inability to stop or cut back: When someone has attempted to stop or reduce their play but finds themselves unable to do so. They may also experience feelings of restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back.
-
Increased frequency or amount of risk: An individual may begin to play more frequently or increase the amounts they are risking, often to reach the level of excitement or interest that they previously experienced with lower amounts of risk.
-
Borrowing money: A person may try to borrow money from others to fund their gaming activities.
-
Neglecting other responsibilities: Someone having difficulty controlling their gaming may neglect important responsibilities including work, school or family obligations.
-
Preoccupation with gaming: Constantly thinking and/or talking about daily fantasy or other gaming activities can be a sign that it has become compulsive and crossed the line into an unhealthy behavior that needs to be addressed.
-
Chasing losses: Playing more in hopes of recouping previous losses is a worrying indicator commonly seen by Birches Health counselors in individuals struggling with gaming problems.
-
Hiding or lying about gaming activity: Someone may feel the need to lie about or hide their play from others, at times due to feelings of shame or embarrassment.
-
Financial or legal troubles that are connected to one’s gaming behaviors.
