The dream ended on December 8th 1980 when John Lennon was shot dead in front of his apartment building in NYC, by crazed fan. I remember I was 10 years old when I heard the news of his death. John Lennon had just come out with a new album after being away from the music scene for 5 years. The first song off the Double Fantasy album was called "just like starting over." I was heavily into 50's music and really loved Elvis at the time and the song had that vibe to it. I found out years later that Lennon was actually going for a Roy Orbison sound when he recorded it. Back in 1980 you couldn't just stream a song or go on YouTube. you kind of had to just wait for it to come out on the radio... I remember it was a Monday night and I was listening to the top 30 countdown on I believe it was with rick dees. so I waited and waited and finally they got to the #8 song but as they got to the song the news broke that Lennon had been shot and killed. That night, I swear every radio station I turned to was playing Lennon/Beatles songs. I listened to the music as long as I could till I fell asleep and that's how I got introduced to one of the most prolific singer songwriters ever, who happened to be in the greatest band EVER! Many of you older guys may have heard the news on MNF via Howard Cosell. his announcement of Johns murder sends chills down my spine to this day. Fell free to share stories of where you were when you heard he news or, if you were too young, share your favorite Beatle Lennon song or what impact they have had on your life...
