BATTERS
Studs to Start
Prince Fielder, Tigers vs. Mariners ($121,472)
The Mariners traded for Aaron Harang last week to bring another veteran into the fold. Prince Fielder approves of that move. In his career Fielder is 14 of 44, with 3 homers and 9 RBI against the righty. He is quite expensive but definitely worth the investment.
Shin-Soo Choo, Reds vs. Phillies ($88,608)
It is a very small sample size but I like what I see in the Choo vs. Kyle Kendrick matchup. He is 2 for 3 with 2 home runs. Sign me up.
Value Plays
Lance Berkman, Rangers vs. Cubs ($65,728)
Lance is off to a sensational start for his new team and this is another matchup to exploit. Berkman has had success against Travis Wood of the Cubs and as long as he is in the lineup as the Rangers play an interleague series in Wrigley, he is worth the reasonable price. He is 7-11, with two homers career against Wood, so he should be in the lineup.
Pedro Alvarez, Pirates vs. Cardinals ($33,696)
This is my favorite player/price for an offensive guy of the day. Yes Alvarez is off to a very slow start for the Bucs, but check out these stats against Jake Westbrook. He’s 11 of 19, with 2 home runs and 8 RBI. You simply cannot ignore that, especially at such a low price.
Bench
Kevin Youkilis, Yankees vs. Diamondbacks ($71,760)
Youk has been a solid contributor early in the season for the Yankees and should continue to provide some punch in the lineup. But against Brandon McCarthy, he is not your guy. 1 for 14 lifetime with 3 strikeouts. He is one to avoid today.
Nick Markakis, Orioles vs. Rays ($76,128)
No matter what his name, Nick Markakis struggles against Roberto Hernandez aka Fausto Carmona. He is 5 for 25 against the righty and despite Nick’s solid start, bench him.
PITCHERS
Studs to Start
A.J. Griffin, A’s vs. Astros ($100,160)
Griffin is off to a great start for the A’s and a juicy matchup against the Astros could make him 3-0. He strikes out his share of hitters and can capitalize on that tendency of the Astros. Well worth the $100k+ price tag.
Dan Haren, Nationals vs. Marlins ($85,440)
Haren has had one good start and one terrible start. Simply put, Haren has an easy matchup against the Marlins and he needs to capitalize on their lack of punch in their lineup to ease concerns he is hurt. I think he is worth the gamble given his track record.
Value Plays
Chris Capuano, Dodgers vs. Padres ($15,000)
This is the play of the day. One benefactor of the Zach Greinke injury is Capuano, who last year was solid for the Dodgers with 12 wins and an under 3.80 ERA. For $15k this is a steal, especially against the Padres, who he is 5-4 with a sub 3.40 ERA against in his career.
Barry Zito, Giants vs. Brewers ($76,800)
Many are wondering when the other shoe will drop on Zito who is 2-0 and yet to allow a run in 2013. The Brewers are short handed without Corey Hart and Aramis Ramirez and the Giants lefty has looked as crafty as ever so far. Well worth rolling the dice at the reasonable price.
Bench
Josh Johnson, Blue Jays vs. White Sox ($86,080)
Simply put, Johnson has looked hurt so far in 2013 and not the ace the Blue Jays thought they were getting when they traded for him in the offseason. The White Sox bats can be trouble for any pitcher and until he proves he is not hurt, I would avoid Johnson in a rather bad matchup.
