Edge – DET
Conclusion: The Tigers have all the dges in this one. They are the better hitting team, averaging 2/3 of a run more than the Nats with a 21-point better wOBA and 16-point better wRC+. The Tigers also have the much better bullpen, with an edge in every single stat. That brings us to the two starting pitchers and while that is a closer matchup, I still give the Tigers the edge.
Dietrich Enns will make his 2nd start tonight gainst the Nats in DC.
The left-hander made his first MLB appearance since 2021 last Thursday against the A’s in what was expected to be a spot start, but he earned another start, after allowing just one hit over 5 scoreless innings. Another start like that could keep Enns in the Tigers’ rotation on a longer-term basis, even with Reese Olson (finger) potentially making his return from the IL this week.
Jake Irvin has now started 17 ga,es with more below average starts (20) than above. average ones (6). His stat profile headed by a mediocre 1.30 WHIP and 4.73 ERA as well as a 71/30 K/BB ratio over 99 innings isn’t very Appealingm and his ERA metrics are even worse with an above league Avertage wOBA and xwOBA. Irvin gave up 9 runs (8 earned) on 9 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5 over 4.1 innings in a no-decision Friday against the Angels. Irvin was awful, but so was his counterpart, Angels starter Jose Soriano. Things got ugly early for Irvin in this one , who gave up f5 runs over the first 3 innings, all on HRs before getting hit some more in the 4th and 5th. This was his shortest start of the season and the 6th time in 17 starts that he's given up 4 or more runs.
I’m not ready to trust Ennis based on one good outing, but the Tigers are the better team ans shoud win this game.
