I had the privilege of attending an off season baseball camp that included Pete Rose and Willie Davis as instructors in the 1970’s.
It was by invitation only for ultra elite high school players. Only the very upper crust were invited. This very exclusive environment allowed the instructors to evaluate the talent and offer suggestions.
Pete and Willie saw I was fleet afoot and offered base running tips. Willie advised me that you DON’T get a double or triple by jogging up the line, rounding first base, and looking for where your hit landed.
Pete chimed right in by suggesting you get those extra base hits by running hard from the batter’s box right towards the 1st base coaching box, taking a turn and being ready to advance without stopping.
It was a great camp, and I was always first in the leagues I played in for getting extra base hits. To honor Pete, I always went into third base head first, popping up to see where the throw went, and often heading home for a run that could be only chalked up to “hustle.”
RIP Pete and Willie. and….. thank you….
