For what it’s worth, I absolutely detest Clay Holmes. He did it again last night. Holmes blew his league-leading 11th save last night. That’s three more than Jalen Beeks who in the 2nd highest with 8, and Holmes accomplished than in 5.1 fewer innings than Beeks. Last night, Holmes was summoned to pitch the bottom of the 9th. After the first batter he faced to ground out, Holes gave up a since, 2 walks and a bases-loaded HR to turn a 4-3 lead into a 7-4 loss. Clay Holmes is nothing but a piece of human excrement and the fact that he is still the Yankees’ closer tells me that heads should roll. Specifically, the head of GM Brian Cashman, who decided that the Yanks bullpen was lust fine and did nothing at the trade deadline to replace Holmes or strengthen the Yanks crappy pen, and the head of manager Aaron Boone who keeps trotting this clown out with games on the line.
Fortunately, the rest of my parlay card did pretty well. The Braves got another great outing from Chris Sale who tossed 7 scoreless innings and struck out 9 to win both their 1st 5 and full games. The Pirates won their 1st 5 behind 5 scoreless innings from rookie sensation Paul Skenes and the Orioles and Dodgers both won their full games. The Mariners also pushed their 1st 5. 6I finished the day +14.60 units. That now leaves me +22.02 units for the 2024 season. I’ll be the first to admit that’s not great, but compared to where I was just a few days ago, I’ll damned sure take it.
For the record, we still have just one MLB team that is playing .600 ball, and that’s the Dodgers, who seem to be playing their best ball of the season\.
We have a full slate of games today. Here’s my extensive Wednesday card.

Fall is here and the NFL regular season is just one day away. Here are my thoughts on today’s MLB games.
PHIL @ TOR
The Phils hung on for a 10-9 win over the Blue Jays in the first game of this series. They now lead the Braves by 7 games in the NL East with just 24 left to play. The Jays have no realistic shout in the AL East and are barely alive in the AL wild card race, 8 games behind the Royals with only 22 left to play.

Conclusion: The Blue Jays are suddenly playing their best ball of the season, but the Phils are still better than the Jays. They sre the much better hitting team and while I don’t really trust the Phils’ pen, it is statistically better than the Jays pen. That leaves the two starting pitchers and that’s a tough call. Cristopher Sanchez has a rock sold stat profile. However, Bowden Francis is pitching incredibly well. The 28-year-old righty has now tossed at least 7 innings of one-run ball in each of his last four outings, winning all of them with a robust 32/3 K:BB ratio.
I’m passing on a 1st 5 and betting on the better team to just win the game.

CHI WS @ BALT
To no one’s surprise, the Orioles again mopped the floor with the White Sox in a 9-0 shutout win last night. What was surprising was 7.1 scoreless innings delivered by young Cade Povich, who has struggled big time this season. With this win and the Yankees loss to the Rangers, the Orioles now lead the Yanks by a half a game in the hotly contested AL East. The 109-loss White Sox are the worst team in baseball, 20.5 games behind the Rockies, the 2nd worst team.

Conclusion: The O’s are much better than the White Sox. Of course, the entire league is much better than the White Sox. The White Sox won’t lose every game they have left, will they?
The O’s are one of the best hitting teams in the league, while the White Sox are the worst. The O’s don’t have a good bullpen, but the White Sox have one of, if not the worst bullpen in baseball. As for the two starting pitchers, Albert Suarez’s stat profile is clearly better than Jonathan Cannon’s, across the board.

After a day off yesterday, these teams will resume their series tonight at Great American. The Reds beat the Asros 5-3 to win the first game of this series on Monday. The Astros now lead he Mariners by 6.5 games in the AL West, while Reds, who have no shot at the playoffs this season, are just playing out the string and looking to next season.

Edge – HOU, but close
Conclusion: The Astros should be better than the Reds. They are the better hitting team, but that’s reasonably close. They also have the statistically. That leaves the two starting pitchers, and he Astros should have an edge there as well. 24-year-oldSpencer Arrighetti was on a tear in August, posting a stellar 0.90 WHIP and 1.95 ERA with a sparkling 13.11 K/9 in 32.1 August innings (5 starts). Arrighetti has noe delivered 3 double-digit K outings in August while lowering his ERA by almost a full run. Nick Martinez’s stats look solid on paper, but don’t let that fool you. His best work has been out of the bullpen. As a started, Martinez has struggled, posting a 5.59 ERA with a .356 wOBA against. He has given up 15 runs (14 earned) in his last four starts (18.2 innings)..

The Braves shut out the Rockies 3-0 last night behind another stellar outing from Chris Sale. They still trail the Phils by 7 games in the NL East, but are still hanging on to the 3rd and final NL wild card spot, just a half a game ahead of the Mets.

Conclusion: Before we get started, lets get one thing straight. The Rockies, who are an almost decent 32-37 when playing at Coors, are an atrocious 19-51 when playing away from Coors. The Braves, who have too often struggled to score runs this season, are still the much better hitting team here. While the Rockies average a lusty 5.01 runs per game at Coors, that number drops to a lousy 3.54 when on the road. Only the Marlins and White Sox average less. The Braves has a decent bullpen, while the Rockies pen is garbage. That brings is to the two starting pitchers and While Charlie Morton is no Chris Sale, his stat profile is still much better than Bradley Blalock.
I’m again fading the Rockies away from Coors and facing a much better team

The Pirates beat the Cubs 5-0 last night behind yet another stellar outing from rookie sensation Paul Skenes, taking the first two games of this series. Although they have no shot at the playoffs, the Pirates are still playing hard. The Cubs won’t catch the Brewers in the NL Central, but they are still in the NL wild race, 4.5 games behind the Braves.

Conclusion: Last night, the Cubs had to deal with rookie phenom Paul Skenes. Tonight they get to face Domingo German. At least temporarily, the Pirates will expand the rotation to a six men, with the addition of German building in an additional day of rest between starts for rookies Skenes and Jared Jones. German did tossed six scoreless innings against the Rangers in his only other start for the Pirates on Aug. 21, but he worked in long relief in his last two appearances, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and 5 walks over 5.2 innings. The Pirates, on the other hand, won’t have the luxery of facing Kyle Hendricks tonight. Instead they get the Cubs best pitcher Shota Imanaga and his stat profile is outstanding. The Cubs are also the better hitting team and has the statistically better bullpen.

The Dodgers are a lot better than the Angels and they showed it last night. They hit better and they have the better bullpen. However, Bobby Miller, who recently revealed that he's been dealing with a left knee issue, has struggled and his stat profile is awful. Griffin Canning hasn’t been much better. His stat profile isn’t very good either. I don’t trust either of these guys so the 1st 5 is a pass, bu, the Dodgers should win this one with their bats.

Both of these teams had yesterday off after the Padres beat the Tigers 3-0 on Monday behind yet another strong outing from Joe Musgrove. The Padres trail the Dodgers by 5.5 games in the NL West and currently hold the top NL wild card spot. The Tigers won’t catch the Guardians in the AL Central, but are still alive in the AL wild card race, 4.5 games behind the Royals.

Conclusion: The Padres should be better than the Tigers. They are the better hitting team and they have the better bullpen, The stats don’t necessarilw show that, but according to Basewinners’ metrics, the Padres bullpen was the best in baseball in the month of August , after all their trade deadline acquisitions. As for the two starting pitchers, Yu Darvish hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 29, but after throwing 66 pitches in a simulated game on Friday and then completing a bullpen session on Monday, he was pronounced ready. Keider Montero’s stat profile isn’t very impressive, but he’s survived.
I have no idea what we’ll get from Darvish tonight, so I’ll pass on the 1st 5 and bet the better team, the Padres, to just win the game.

The Diamondbacks hung on for an 8-7 win over the Giant last night in the first game of this series. They now trail the Dodgers by 6 games on the NL West, but currently hold the 2nd NL wild card spot. The Giants are still mathematically alive in the NL wild card race, 7.5 games behind the Braves, but any teams that loses two straight to the Marlins, like the Giants did over the weekend, probably doesn’t deserve to male the playoffs.

Conclusion: The Diamondbacks have most of the edges in this one. Most prominent among them is that they are the much better hitting team here. The Dbacks lead the league in runs per game and rank 2nd in BA and wOBAm and 4th in wRC+. The Giants , on the other hand, possess an offense that rans a little lower than league average. Neither bullpen is very good. That leaves the two starting pitchers and while Zac Gallen has not pitched as well as he has in recent seasons, he has still been better than Hayden Birsong, who can generate Ks, but that’s about it for positives.
The Dbacks should win this one with their bat and Gallen should be better than Birdsong.
