Edge – SF
Conclusion: The Giants won the first two games of this series 6-1 on Monday night and 2-1 last night. That leaves them just 5 games out in the NL wild card race. The Dbacks are realistically not contenders this season, but maybe soon. Offensively, with the exception of walk and strikeout rates, the Giants hold most of the statistical edges. As for the two bullpens, they’re both lousy, but the stas say maybe the Dbacks are a little less so. That leave the two starting pitchers, and ther the Giants should have a big edge
Zach Davies has now started 18 games for the Dbacks with 10 grading as above average and 8 grading as below. Davies’ WHIP is fine, but his ERA is mediocre with ERA metrics that are mostly about a half a run higher than his mediocre ERA. l. His xwOBA is also a little higher than his actual wOBA, but right around league average. Davies generates a decent number of GBs, but doesn’t miss many bats and walks to many batters for a pitch-to-contact tyle. Davies has turned being mediocre into a surprising long MLB career.
Carlos Rodon started the season out great, but then struggled over a five start stretch beginning with that atrocious Sunday night outing against the Cards on May 15. However, over his last 12 starts, he has mostly returned to form, delivering 9 above average outings, 1 average and just 2 below average ones. Rodon’s WHIP and ERA are both excellent, as are all his ERA metrics. His wOBA and xwOBA are both well under league average, with an elite K rate, but a fairly high walk rate.
Rodon is eliite, while Davies is a journeyman and the Giants have the much better offense as well.
Pick – SF 1st 5 and full game ML in a series of parlays
