Blog Post: Spurs vs Heat Odds 2013 NBA Finals Game 7

The Spurs and Heat will play for all the marbles tomorrow night as they battle at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami. Thursday’s series finale is scheduled to tip off at 9:00pm ET on ABC. The latest 2013 NBA Finals Game 7 Odds have the Heat listed as a -6 against the spread home favorite; the Over/Under is set at 189.5 points. San Antonio is drawing +220 odds ($100 wins $220) to win its fifth championship in the last 15 years while Miami is getting a -260 money line ($260 wins $100) to keep the title in South Beach.

The Heat did what everyone thought they would last night, but they did not do in the manner most anticipated. Miami had won and covered its previous 12 games off a loss, but it narrowly survived Game 6, beating the Spurs 103-100 in overtime.

The Heat, playing as a seven point home favorite, needed a miracle three-pointer from Ray Allen in the game’s final seconds to force overtime and, eventually, a game seven. Preceding Allen’s stunning baseline jumper was a furious fourth quarter rally led by LeBron James.

Miami trailed by 10 at the start of the final frame, but James scored 15 points in the final 12 minutes, helping the Heat close the gap and get in position to tie the game. James finished the game with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists; Mario Chalmers, who knocked down 4-of-5 from long range, was the only other Miami player to reach the 20 point mark.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs in their failed attempt to secure a fifth NBA Championship, posting 30 points and 17 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard also recorded a double-double as he finished the night with 22 points and 11 boards.

Despite Miami’s recent difficulty stringing together wins, the odds makers believe the Heat will get the job done tomorrow night. Still, the spread seems a bit much. Perhaps the books are expecting an emotionally drained Spurs team to show up at the AmericanAirlines Arena tomorrow night.

That could be the case given the gut wrenching fashion in which they lost; however, this is a veteran San Antonio squad that has yet to suffer back to back losses in these playoffs.

Notable Trends: The Heat are 0-6 both straight up and against the spread in their last six games off a win, losing by an average of 12.5 points per game.

The American League East leading Boston Red Sox welcome the Tampa Bay Rays back to Fenway Park tonight as two teams conclude their three game set in Bean Town. This evening’s meeting between the Red Sox and Rays is scheduled to get underway at 7:10pm ET. The latest MLB Free Picks and Odds from 5Dimes have the Red Sox listed as a -125 moneyline favorite and the Over/Under set at 9.5 runs (Under favored at -120 odds). Tampa Bay is drawing +115 odds ($100 wins $115) to avoid being swept.

Boston improved its record to an American League best 44-29 last night with a 3-1 series deciding victory over the Rays. The Red Sox were ineffective at the plate for the majority of the game, nearly spoiling a gem from starter Felix Doubront (eight innings, three hits, no runs). A two run homer in the bottom of the ninth from Jonny Gomes broke a 1-1 tie, though, and carried Boston to victory.

The Red Sox will seek its 24^th home win of the season with veteran Ryan Dempster on the hill. Boston is 3-5 in Dempster’s last eight outings and they are 4-6 in his 10 starts at Fenway Park. Boston did win his last two home starts, though, as they supported him with an astounding 27 runs in wins over the Rangers and Angels.

The 36-35 Rays, who have lost six of their last seven games, will counter Dempster with third year pro Jeremy Hellickson. Tampa Bay is 3-1 in Hellickson’s last four appearances, despite most of those being less than stellar performances from the Iowa native.

Hellickson, who owns a 5.56 ERA in seven road starts, is coming off his worst outing of the season, a 10-1 home loss to the Royals in which he allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs over 5.2 innings.

Notable Trends: The Over is 5-0 in the Red Sox last five games as a home favorite with a total between 9.5 and 10 runs.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to sweep the Washington Nationals tonight when the two division rivals close out a three game set at Citizens Bank Park. This evening’s series finale is scheduled to get underway at 7:05pm ET. MLB Free Picks and Odds at offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have the visiting Nationals listed as a slight -115 moneyline favorite ($115 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at 7.5 runs. The Phillies are drawing +105 odds to earn their 36^th win of the season.

The Nationals lost for the fourth time in five games last night to fall to 34-36 overall and into a second place tie with the Phillies in the National League East standings.

The main culprit in Washington’s recent struggles, an inability to score runs, reared its ugly head again as they managed six hits and two runs off of Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon in yesterday’s 2-4 setback.

The Nats look for a better offensive showing tonight as they face Philadelphia’s Kyle Kendrick. Kendrick, who owns a 3.76 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, is coming off his worst performance of the season, an 8-7 win at Colorado in which he allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs over 4.1 innings.

The 28 year old right hander had put together three consecutive quality starts prior to the Rockies game and he is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in his last four home starts.

The Phillies, an 18-15 home team, will combat Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez has not been as effective this season as last, but he has been solid nonetheless, producing a 3.40 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 14 starts.

Despite Gonzalez allowing just 11 hits and four earned runs over 20 innings in his last three outings, the Nationals posted a 0-3 record. Perhaps his luck will change this evening against the Phillies. Gonzalez is 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA in four career starts opposite Philadelphia.

Notable Trends: The Over is 8-2 in the Phillies last 10 games as a home underdog against a left handed pitcher.

Analysis: The Seattle Mariners finally put together a good outing at Angel Stadium and attempt to beat Los Angeles for the second straight night when the teams meet Wednesday in the third contest of a four-game series. The Mariners notched a 3-2, 10-inning victory on Tuesday when Kendrys Morales singled in the winning run against his former club. Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak (oblique) was activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday’s contest and homered in his first at-bat. Joe Saunders is 1-4 with a 7.58 ERA in seven road starts this season but at least will be pitching in a familiar park in Angel Stadium. The ballpark was his home field from 2005-10 and he has a 25-19 mark and 4.60 ERA in 64 career starts in Anaheim. Saunders has faced the Angels just once, last season when he was with Baltimore, and gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings at Angels Stadium.

The Angels had outscored Seattle 30-4 in three home games this season prior to the extra-inning defeat last night. Los Angeles outfielder Josh Hamilton suffered through a miserable 0-for-5 night in which he hit into three double plays and struck out twice. The Angels’ fans serenaded with him jeers as the player who received a five-year, $125 million contract in the offseason is batting just .213 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs. Hamilton is 4-for-10 with a homer and six RBIs against Saunders. 1B Albert Pujols is 13-for-27 over the last six games and clubbed his 12th homer of the season and 487th of his career on Tuesday. CJ Wilson had lost five of six decisions before beating the New York Yankees in his last outing when he gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings. He has pitched five or fewer innings in two of his last four starts, giving up 14 earned runs in 24 innings during the stretch. Wilson is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts against Seattle this season, striking out 19 in 13 1/3 innings.

Pick: Last night I had the Halo's on the Runline and It lost, but I will come right back with it tonight. Seattle got a rare win in this park last night, but the Halos should bounce back nicely, behind CJ Wilson. CJ's teams are 8-1 in his last 9 starts vs the Mariners and he has a 2.23 ERA in those games. Joe Saunders is pitching well right now, but still he is 1-4 with a 7.48 ERA on the road this year. The Mariners are 1-6 in his road starts and they have been outscored by 4 rpg in those starts. I look for strong bounceback game by the Halos offense as they win by at least 3 runs.

Analysis: The Oakland Athletics can take comfort in knowing they'll leave Texas still leading the AL West. Brandon Moss hit his 13th homer while Jarrod Parker and two relievers held Texas (39-32) to three hits to help Oakland even the four-game set with a 6-2 win Tuesday. The A's (43-30) have dropped three of five since winning 21 of 26, but own a three-game lead over a Rangers club that has lost seven of eight and is 5-12 this month. Tied for the team lead with 13 homers, Moss is batting .357 (10 for 28) with four homers and seven RBIs in his last six games. He recorded three home runs for his only hits in his previous 36 at bats. Tommy Milone (6-6, 3.61 ERA), is 1-1 with a 2.18 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Friday. The left-hander, who has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 14 starts, posted a 2.50 ERA despite going 0-2 in three road starts against the Rangers last season.

Aside from Monday's 8-7 win over Oakland, Texas has totaled 10 runs in its seven losses over the last eight. Its starting pitchers have gone without a win this month, breaking the team record of 16 straight set in 1975. Texas second basemen Ian Kinsler had a hit Tuesday, but also needed stitches near his jaw after a collision at home plate in third inning. Four games back from missing almost a month with an oblique strain, Kinsler was screened for a concussion and remained in the game. He is 3 for 7 in the series, and 2 for 6 against scheduled Oakland starter Tommy Milone. Justin Grimm (5-5, 5.59) is 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his last three starts. The right-hander allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 7 2-3 innings of an 8-0 loss to Toronto on Friday. In those three starts, Grimm has endured a six-run inning and two four-run frames. Grimm allowed five runs and homers to Moss and Yoenis Cespedes in five innings of a 5-1 loss at Oakland on May 13.

Pick: I like the A's in this one. Texas is really struggling offensively and they will have to score a bunch with Grimm on the mound, who has an 11.40 ERA in his last 3 starts. Texas just won't get enough offense in this one as the hot hitting A's put up plenty to get the win here.

Boston can take a strangle hold on the Stanley Cup Finals tonight if they can get past the Chicago Blackhawks. The Bruins have been able to win back to back games in pretty close contests, which is exactly what the NHL and fans are looking for in the finals. In tonight's game, however, the Bruins might not be able to keep off the Blackhawks, who will surely be firing with everything they have to try and even this series.

Tuukka Rask has been the most impressive player on the ice for the finals, shutting out the powerful Blackhawks in Game 3 and allowing just five goals in the previous three games total to a Chicago team that was impressive during the regular season. So far this series Rask has stopped 120 shots.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said Marian Hossa is expected to play in tonight's game after being a late scratch from Game 3 with an "upper body" injury. If he plays and has an impact on tonight's game, the Blackhawks might be able to snatch a win in tonight's game before heading back to Chicago with the series tied. Ultimately that would be the best option for Chicago tonight after having lost home ice advantage with a Game 2 loss to Boston.

Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane have to play well in tonight's game. Sharp scored the only goal for Chicago in a Game 2 loss at home and that's the only tally for either player through the first three games of the series. Getting to the Stanley Cup Finals is surely an accomplishment and role players are great, but in order to hoist the Cup your primetime players have to show up and contribute.

Zdeno Chara and the Bruins are aiming for the gut shot in tonight's game. A win would be huge for either team, but Boston can essentially shut the door on the series if they can win. It would put the Blackhawks in must-win mode for the rest of the series, obviously, but would also make Boston just a single game from winning their second Cup in three seasons.

Both teams are going to play well tonight. We like the grind guys for Chicago with Dave Bolland and Andrew Shaw. Yes, the prime guys have to show up and get in on the scoring action, but we expect the role guys to also contribute well tonight. Look for the Blackhawks to get great games from both sets of guys in tonight's game. This series is heading back to Chicago tied at 2-2.

Analysis: Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly never won a World Series with the New York Yankees, but he'll forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in the team's storied history. Mattingly, a six-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1985 AL MVP, had his No. 23 retired to Monument Park after playing his entire 14-year career with the Yankees. The former first baseman never made it to the World Series, though, hanging it up in 1995, right before the Yankees' run of four titles in five seasons. The Dodgers are 10 games below .500 and in last place in the National League West, but they've received a boost from rookie sensation Yasiel Puig, who is hitting .479 through his first 13 big-league games. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been one of few brights spots for the Dodgers, (other than Puig) allowing two earned runs or fewer in nine of his 13 starts. He has also recorded quality starts in each of his past four outings. Ryu had to work out of a good bit of trouble his last time out, allowing 11 hits against the Diamondbacks but giving up only three runs over six innings. Ryu has struggled a bit on the road with a 4.10 ERA in six starts compared to a 1.88 ERA in seven home outings. Los Angeles has won just four of 17 as the visitor, this year.

The Yankees (38-31), meanwhile, are back home following a 4-6 trip that ended with Sunday's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. New York plated five runs in the third inning - a three-run homer from Travis Hafner and RBI hits from Lyle Overbay and Jayson Nix - en route to snapping a five-game skid. The Yankees hit .199 while averaging 2.7 runs in their previous nine games. New York likely will have to generate offense without Mark Teixeira for this series after he exited Saturday's 6-2 loss with an aggravated right wrist. The switch-hitter got a cortisone shot Sunday, and it was determined there were no new tears in the tendon sheath, which could have ended his season. Overbay, who went 1 for 13 on the trip, is Teixeira's likely replacement. Hiroki Kuroda is looking to snap a five-start winless streak as he prepares to face his former team for the first time. The 38-year-old native of Japan settled for a no-decision against the Athletics in Oakland on Thursday despite allowing just two runs and two hits over eight innings. Kuroda has surrendered more than three earned runs only twice in 14 starts this season.

Pick: The Yankee offense is stick in the mud right now, as they have averaged just 3 rpg in their last 10 games. The Yanks are 14-7 vs southpaws this year, but they hit just .228 and score just 3.3 rpg off of them, plus we note that the yanks have averaged just 2.3 rpg and have hit just .219 in interleague games this year. Their offense, that is now missing Teixeira, won't get much going tonight vs Ryu, who comes in with a 1.59 ERA and an 0.84 WHIP in his last 3 starts. The Dodgers offense is getting better, but still they score just 3.66 rpg on the road and just 3.4 rpg at night on the year, and I don't see them getting much off of Hiroki Kuroda, who has a 1.96 ERA at home on the year. Yankee games vs lefties has gone 5-14-2 to the Under with just 6.7 rpg being scored, while their 10 interleague games have averaged just 5.7 rpg, with those games going 9-1 to the Under. I just don't see much offense in the Bronx today.

Analysis: The San Diego Padres have won seven straight to move within one game of first-place Arizona, and they’re doing it without injured regulars Everth Cabrera, Carlos Quentin, Jedd Gyorko, Yonder Alonso and Cameron Maybin. Cabrera and Quentin are listed as day-to-day, while the others are on the disabled list. San Diego, which continues its three-game series against the host San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, owns a 31-19 record since April 24. Andrew Cashner turned in his second straight quality start last Tuesday, allowing two runs over eight innings against the Braves. He’s worked six or more innings in each of his last seven starts, going 4-1 with a 3.17 ERA over that stretch. Buster Posey is 4-for-9 with two homers against the 26-year-old right-hander, who is 1-3 with a 3.94 ERA in eight career games (two starts) against the Giants.

The Giants have lost five of their last seven and are also dealing with a number of injuries, though Bochy told the team's official website Monday that Marco Scutaro could return to the lineup Tuesday. Batting a team-best .332, Scutaro hasn't played since last Tuesday due to an injured left hand. Bochy also said that Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval are nearing the start of rehab assignments and could return to the club Monday for the team's series against the Dodgers. Matt Cain has bounced back from a surprisingly shaky April by going 5-1 with a 3.54 ERA in his last eight starts. He’s 7-11 with a 3.17 ERA in 30 career starts against the Padres, going 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two starts last season. The 28-year-old Cain, who will be making the 250th start of his career, has allowed one run over his last two starts covering 13 2/3 innings.

Pick: Matt Cain had a rough start to the year, but he has been pitching better of late, allowing 2 ER's or less in 4 of his last 5 starts. Matt also has pitched well vs the Padres of late with a 1,78 ERA in his last 5 starts vs them. allot of Matt's problems this year have been in his day starts where he has a 6.15 ERA, while posting a 3.45 ERA at night on the year. Andre Cashner has also pitched well at night with a 3.14 ERA and he comes in with a solid 3.48 ERA in his last 3 road starts, which include Colorado, Arizona and Baltimore. All good offenses. Matt Cain has also pitched well of late, allowing 2 ER's in 4 of his last 5 starts. He does have a 4.62 ERA at home, but just a 2.30 ERA in his last 4 starts at home, allowing no more than 2 ER's in any of those starts. The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels continue their four game set this evening with a game two clash at Angel Stadium. Tonight’s meeting between the Mariners and Angels is scheduled to get underway at 10:05pm ET. The latest MLB Free Picks and Odds at 5Dimes are favoring the Angels at -180 on the moneyline ($180 wins $100); the Over/Under is set at nine runs (Under favored at -115 odds).

The Angels are third in the AL West standings with a 31-39 record, but they have played good baseball over the last week, posting their fourth win in five games with last night’s 11-3 thrashing of the Mariners.

Los Angeles has averaged 7.2 runs per game in its last five games and it will attempt to keep the bats working tonight against former Tiger Jeremy Bonderman.

Bonderman is three games into his return to the major leagues and, at least to this point, the results are solid. The Washington native had a rocky Seattle debut, giving up nine this and seven runs over 4.2 innings against the Twins, but his last two appearances were excellent. Bonderman allowed just six hits and one run over 14 innings opposite the Yankees and Astros.

Seattle, which can surpass the Angels in the division standings with a win tonight, will square off against beleaguered hurler Joe Blanton. Blanton owns a 5.87 ERA and 1.63 WHIP and his record is an abysmal 1-10 in 13 starts.

Blanton did, however, preside over three consecutive quality starts prior to his last outing. The 32 year old right hander yielded seven earned runs over 21.1 innings against the Royals, Dodgers, and Astros. Blanton reverted back to form on June 9^th, though, giving up eight hits and six runs in a 5-10 loss at Boston.

Notable Trends: The Over is 8-2 in the Mariners last 10 games as a road dog with a total between 8.5 and 9 runs.

The Yankees (38-31), meanwhile, are back home following a 4-6 trip that ended with Sunday's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. New York plated five runs in the third inning - a three-run homer from Travis Hafner and RBI hits from Lyle Overbay and Jayson Nix - en route to snapping a five-game skid. The Yankees hit .199 while averaging 2.7 runs in their previous nine games. New York likely will have to generate offense without Mark Teixeira for this series after he exited Saturday's 6-2 loss with an aggravated right wrist. The switch-hitter got a cortisone shot Sunday, and it was determined there were no new tears in the tendon sheath, which could have ended his season. Overbay, who went 1 for 13 on the trip, is Teixeira's likely replacement. Phil Hughes has been wildly inconsistent, recording seven quality starts and failing to get through five innings in five outings. His most recent performance falls into the latter category, as he lasted only 4 1/3 innings at Oakland and gave up three runs while walking five. Hughes has never faced the Dodgers but is familiar with a few Los Angeles players - including Adrian Gonzalez, who is 5-for-14 against him.

Pick: I know the Dodgers are just 4-17 on the road this year, but that has to even out a little as the season goes on and I see this as a good situational spot for them to pick up a big win. The Yanks are off a long road trip and Hughes has really struggled at home, going just 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA in 6 starts here this year. The Dodger offense is not great, but it is getting better with Puig in there, plus Gonzalez has good numbers in this park, hitting .276 with 5 HR's and 18 RBI's in 15 career games here. Ryu comes in in fine form, with a 1-0 mark and a 1.59 ERA in his last 3 starts. Now the Yanks are 14-7 vs lefties on the year, but they also hit just .228 and score just 3.3 rpg off of them on the year. This struggling offense is also missing Teixeira. Situationally. the Dodgers have the edge and they have a clear edge on the mound. Just don't see NY coming up with enough runs to take.

Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs & the Miami Heat takes place tonight in South Beach. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 PM (Eastern) start time and will be televised on ABC. Currently the Odds for the game have Miami favored by 7 points while the total sits at 191.

Analysis: The San Antonio Spurs are one win away from their fifth NBA title. San Antonio took a 3-2 lead with a 114-104 victory Sunday behind a season-best game from Manu Ginobili and another superb performance from 3-point shooter Danny Green. San Antonio shot a blistering 60% from the floor and 41% from three-point range (9-of-22), with SG Danny Green knocking down six threes, giving him an NBA Finals record 25 made three-pointers in the series. The Heat actually shot better from behind the arc (48%, 11-of-23) than they did on their two-point shots (41%, 26-for-63) during Game 5. Green is the clear-cut Finals MVP if San Antonio closes out the series in Game 6. Superb ball movement by San Antonio has presented Green with numerous unguarded looks and he has answered by making 65.8 percent of his 3-point attempts. “My teammates have done a great job of finding me and getting me open,” Green said. “Luckily, it seems everything is going right for me.” Parker scored a game-high 26 points in Game 5 despite playing through a hamstring injury while power forward Tim Duncan had 17 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the series.

Miami is 14-7 SU and 11-10 ATS (52%) this postseason, and the offense is finally starting to gel. After failing to reach 100 points in five straight games, the Heat have surpassed the century mark in three of the past four contests, averaging 98.3 PPG on 47% FG and 46% threes during these four games. They continue to protect the basketball with great care, piling up 22.2 APG and just 11.0 TOPG (2.02 Ast/TO ratio) in the NBA Finals. After getting lit up for 114 points in Game 5, Miami has now allowed 99.2 PPG on 47% FG (44% threes) to San Antonio this series. That's a big drop-off from the first three playoff series when Heat opponents scored just 87.6 PPG on 43% FG (33% threes). Forward LeBron James is aware he will receive a lot of criticism if Miami falls short, but he isn’t running from it on the eve of Game 6. James is averaging 21.6 points and 10.8 rebounds and has reached 20 points just twice in the series. “I have to come up big for sure in Game 6,” James said. “But I believe we all have to play at a high level in order to keep the series going. So me being one of the leaders of this team, I do put a lot of pressure on myself to force a Game 7 and I look forward to the challenge.” Guard Dwyane Wade has put together back-to-back stellar games of 32 and 25 points and veteran guard Ray Allen had his best game of the series with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting in Game 5.

Pick: I like the Under in his one. The Heat's offense is looking better of late, but they really need to slow the pace if they are gonna force a game 7. Both teams do play excellent defense and i don't expect the Spurs to be able to connect on a ton of 3's in South Beach, like they were able to at home. This one should be played in the lower 180's

The Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians continue their battle for second fiddle in the AL Central tonight with a 7:05pm ET battle at Progressive Field. MLB Free Picks and Odds at offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have the hosting Indians listed as a slight -109 moneyline favorite and the Over/Under set at 7.5 runs.

The Royals continued their red hot play last night, earning a 2-1 win in their series opener against Cleveland to even their record at 34-34 and move past the Indians into second place in the AL Central standings.

Kansas City’s pitching staff gave up six free passes to the Indians, but they also allowed just six hits, including Carlos Santana’s solo bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning off James Shields.

The Royals, who have allowed just 249 runs this season (fewest in American League and fourth fewest in baseball), will look for a similar effort from Ervin Santana tonight.

Santana has been excellent this season, posting a 2.74 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 13 starts and he has worked at least six innings in each of his appearances this season. Santana, who has allowed just 13 hits, two earned runs, and two walks in his last three outings (21.2 innings) for a 0.84 ERA and 0.70 WHIP, is 2-2 with a 2.43 ERA in six away starts this year.

The Indians will counter Santana, who presided over a 3-2 win over Cleveland on April 27^th (six hits, no runs, no walks, six strikeouts), with Ubaldo Jimenez.

Jimenez turned in, arguably, his best performance of the season at Kauffman Stadium on April 29^th as he limited the Royals to three hits over seven innings in a 9-0 Cleveland victory.

Jimenez, who owns a 4.79 ERA and 1.37 WHIP, is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five career appearances against Kansas City.

Notable Trends: The Indians are 6-1 in their last seven games as a home favorite with a total between 7.5 and 8 runs.

It is do or die time for the defending champion Miami Heat tonight as they welcome the San Antonio Spurs back to the AmericanAirlines Arena for Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals. This evening’s meeting between the Spurs and Heat is scheduled to get underway at 9:00pm ET on ABC. The latest NBA Odds have Miami listed as a -7.5 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 191.5 points. The Spurs and Heat are drawing +280 and -340 moneyline odds ($340 wins $100), respectively.

The Heat now, officially, have their backs against the wall, trailing the Spurs 2-3 in the best of seven NBA Finals; however, they are also in their favorite situation, which is coming off a loss. Miami is a ridiculous 12-0 both straight up and against the spread in its last 12 games off a loss, and, what’s more it gets San Antonio at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

The odds makers are keenly aware of the Heat’s recent streak, though, and they are aiming to combat it with a rather steep line. Given the Spurs performance throughout the playoffs, 7.5 looks too big, but there has yet to be a game in this series, other than the opener, where the winning team did not win by at least 10 points.

Miami has been especially hard on its postseason opposition (including the Spurs) off a loss, winning the following game by an average of 20.7 points per game. While San Antonio played exceptional basketball in winning games three and five, there is little reason to believe the Heat break character, especially at home, and fail to show and show well for tonight’s contest.

Bitter rivals Chicago and St. Louis open a four game set at Busch Stadium tonight with Travis Wood and Shelby Miller on the hill. This evening’s meeting between the Cubs and Cardinals is scheduled to get underway at 7:00pm ET on ESPN. ESPN Monday Baseball Odds at offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have the Cardinals listed as a -192 moneyline favorite ($192 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at 7.5 runs (Under favored at -120 odds). Chicago is drawing +181 odds ($100 wins $181) to take tonight’s series opener.

The Cardinals closed out a nine game road stand last night in unspectacular fashion as they fell 2-7 to the lowly Marlins. The setback ensured a series loss to Miami and dropped St. Louis record to a still NL Central best 44-25.

The Cardinals will look to shake off their unusual collapse against the bottom feeding Marlins by roughing up on the Cubs.

To that end, St. Louis, a winner in nine of its last 13 meetings with Chicago, will give the ball to rookie Shelby Miller. Miller’s season numbers are fantastic as he brings a 7-4 record, 2.21 ERA, and 0.97 WHIP, but his Busch Stadium totals are even more mind numbing.

In six home starts Miller is 4-1 with a 1.12 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and a .179 batting average against. The Texas native also has 50 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched at Busch.

The 28-39 Cubs, who had a three game winning streak snapped yesterday, will attempt to foil the Cards plan with Travis Wood on the hill. The left handed Wood has his own set of impressive stats, sporting a 2.54 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and .191 batting average against; however, his performance has not helped the Cubs in the win column all that much (1-4 in his last five starts).

Notable Trends: The Cardinals, who are hitting just .232 against left handed pitching (23^rd in the league), are 1-5 in their last six games as a home favorite against left handed pitching with a total between 7.5 and 8 runs.

Analysis: Seattle had won four of five before falling 10-2 at Oakland on Sunday. Hisashi Iwakuma labored through five innings and the bullpen gave up four homers over the next three frames, surrendering six runs and nine hits. The third-place Mariners are a half-game ahead of Los Angeles, which is a disappointing nine games under .500. 1B Justin Smoak (oblique) could return during the four-game series. He last played on May 29. Former Angel Kendrys Morales, mired in a 2-for-26 slump, is 4 for 10 with two homers against Vargas since the start of 2012. Harang has been roughed up twice by the Angels this season, allowing 12 runs and 15 hits (including four homers) in 6 2/3 innings in two losses. He is 0-3 with an 8.02 ERA in five career starts against Los Angeles. Harang was fabulous in his last outing against the Houston Astros, striking out a season-high 10 in a two-hit shutout.

The Los Angeles Angels seek to continue their home dominance of the Seattle Mariners when the teams begin a four-game series tonight. The Angels. who are 26-9 in their last 35 home games against the Mariners, will look to overtake Seattle in the American League West standings. Los Angeles outfielder Josh Hamilton was given the day off Sunday as he continues to struggle with a .213 average, nine homers and 22 RBIs in 258 at-bats. Mike Trout, who is 5 for 10 with five walks in his last three games, went 6 for 9 with five RBIs and four runs as Los Angeles swept a two-game home series from Seattle last month. Jason Vargas dropped a 2-1 decision in his return to Seattle on April 28 when he allowed solo homers to Jason Bay and Michael Morse in eight innings of work. He gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings while losing to Baltimore in his last turn to halt a streak of five consecutive winning decisions. Vargas is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA in seven home starts.

Pick: Big Price I know, but I think it's warranted. Back in May when these teams played here the Angels swept the 2 game series by a 19-1 count, and that was when they weren't even playing well. They still aren't setting the world on fire, but they are playing better, having won 3 of their last 4 games and nearly pulled out a miracle win yesterday vs the Yanks. he Angels offense is starting to hit much better and they will be facing Aaron Harang, who s 0-3 with a 8.02 ERA in 5 career starts vs the Halos. Aaron has faced the Halos twice this year and has been lit up, allowing 12 ER's on 15 hits and 4 homers in just 6.2 innings of work. He lost both games and was outscored by an 18-3 count in those games. Jason Vargas has sputtered a bit in his last 2 starts, but still in his last 6 starts he has allowed 3 ER's or less and is 4-1 in those games. At home he has gone 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA and while he did lose once to Seattle this year he di allow just 2 ER's in 8 innings in that start. The Halos average 4.61 rpg at home and they should easily eclipse that vs Harang tonight. Seattle scores just 3.37 rpg on the road and just won't come up with nearly enough offense to take out the improving and desperate Halos tonight. This is a huge series for the Angels as they can pass Seattle in the standings and I feel they will kick off the series in fine fashion.

Analysis: The Oakland Athletics have taken control of the AL West in part because of the Texas Rangers' struggles on their longest homestand of the season. The A's will try to add to those woes while padding their advantage in a four-game series that begins tonight.
Oakland trailed by one game in the division after Texas won the opener of an 11-game homestand last Monday. The Rangers (38-31) haven't recorded a victory since, and the A's (42-29) have moved three games ahead. Oakland enters having won 22 of 29 but nearly suffered a three-game sweep to Seattle this weekend. The A's scored two runs over the first two games of the series and went scoreless in 13 straight innings before a 10-2 victory Sunday. Dan Straily is 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA in his last five outings, rebounding from a shaky start to the season. He has limited opponents to a .179 average while walking just four batters in 32 2/3 innings during the hot stretch. The run began with seven scoreless innings at Texas on May 21. The 24-year-old has a 2.50 ERA in three career starts vs. the Rangers.

If the Texas Rangers are going to rediscover their offensive prowess, now is a good time. The suddenly punchless Rangers continue their search for answers as they begin a four-game series against first-place Oakland. Texas has been outscored 34-8 in its first six-game losing streak since April 15-21, 2010, and its longest at home since a seven-game skid July 20-Aug. 3, 2005. The Rangers didn't get on the scoreboard until the ninth inning in Sunday's 7-2 loss to Toronto. Nelson Cruz is 4 for 18 during the skid and Elvis Andrus is 3 for 20. A matchup with a struggling Nick Tepesch (3-6, 4.30) might help Oakland keep rolling. The right-hander has given up 11 runs over 12 innings in his last two starts. He yielded five over five innings in a 5-2 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday. Tepesch has also been given a combined six runs of support over his last five starts - not surprisingly - all losses for Texas.

Pick: Ok Im gonna throw a few stats out there that im sure not many of you would have expected heading into this year. Rangers Stadium has always been one of the best hitting parks in the league, but not ths year as this park is 14th in hitting and just 7.94 rpg have been scored in Texas home games. This is a stadium that is used to seeing 11 or 12 rpg being scored. That's stat one. Stat number 2 is the fact that the Ranger home games have gone 24-8-1 to the under this year. That's amazing. Ok stat 3 is the fact that Texas has scored just 4.39 rpg at home this year. THis is a team that has put up 5.5+ rpg at home for years. The Texas offense s sputtering overall right now as they have averaged just 2.4 rpg in their last 10 games and the Under is 9-1 in those games. Nicholas Tepesch has made 12 starts on the year and he does have a 4.30 ERA in those starts, but the Under is 9-2-1 in his games, with just 7.33 rpg being scored. At home he has pitched well with a 3.66 ERA and all 6 of his home starts have gone under the total, with just 5.67 rpg being scored in those games. Dan Straily has a 4.45 ERA overall, but just a 2.20 ERA in his last 5 starts, so he is pitching very well at the moment as should have little problems in shutting down an anemic Texas Offense. Dan has a 4.35 ERA on te road and his road starts have gone 4-1 to the Over, but interesting to note that his road starts have averaged just 7.8 rpg. Dan has made 2 career starts in this park and has allowed just 1 ER in 13.2 innings of work in those starts and his one start here this year was a 1-0 final. With a struggling Texas offense in a non-hitters park his year and with some solid pitching on the mound, i will expect no more than 7 runs in this one.

Blog Post: NHL Playoffs Start Time, Odds Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins Game 3

The Stanley Cup Finals continue tonight with the series shifting east as the Boston Bruins host the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 3. Tonight's game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on NBC. Currently the odds for the game have the Bruins favored to take a lead in the series.

Boston was able to march into Chicago for the opening two games of this series and got what they needed to have — a split. Both games went into the overtime session and 10-plus periods have been played to this point already. But now they'll have to hold home ice advantage over the Blackhawks, who will have the same goal as Boston did the opening two games, just get a split.

Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has played very well in this series to this point, despite allowing five goals total in the first two games. But then again, that's taken place during 10 periods of ice time and he has faced a whole lot of shots from the Blackhawks. He's stopped 92 shots so far in just two games for this Finals appearance, making 59 in the opener and 33 more in Game 2.

Tyler Seguin had the team hash it all out in the locker room after the first period of Game 2, trying to get his team to figure out that they were getting destroyed by the Blackhawks in nearly every aspect of the game. They went on to bring their game up a notch and the Bruins were able to pick up the win. Seguin and his team will be looking to take advantage tonight at home, where they went 16-5-3 during the regular season and have played extremely well in the playoffs.

Milan Lucic has seemed to get into the heads of Chicago stars Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp. Lucic is a very physical forward and also has been a very good weapon for the Bruins offensively. Corey Crawford hasn't played poorly in net for Chicago during the series but better bring his best game tonight, because the Bruins are going to be juiced up with their home crowd and a chance to take a major hold on this series. That all has to start with a win tonight in a very pivotal Game 3.

If the Bruins are able to win tonight, Chicago will automatically be in must-win mode. They can't drop the next two games to Boston without losing some confidence, so expect them to play a very good game tonight. But in the end we like the Bruins to pick up the win. This one's not going to overtime.

The New York Mets open the most unusual 11 game road set tonight with a meeting against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. This evening’s game, the first of five between the two NL East rivals, is scheduled to get underway at 7:10pm ET. MLB Free Picks and Odds at 5Dimes have the Braves listed as a heavy -190 home favorite ($190 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at 7.5 runs (Under favored at -115 odds). The Mets are drawing +180 odds to take tonight’s opener.

The reeling Mets, who have dropped 10 of their last 13 games, stopped the bleeding if only temporarily last night by avoiding a home sweep at the hands of the Cubs. New York topped Chicago 4-3, bringing its record to 25-39.

The Mets have a good opportunity to chip away at the Braves division lead starting tonight, but not many expect that to happen. Dillion Gee will get first crack at Atlanta as he makes his 14^th start of the season this evening.

Gee’s numbers are not good, he owns a 4.84 ERA and 1.53 WHIP; however, the 27 year old right hander has been spectacular in his last three starts. Gee won each of his last three outings after allowing 19 hits, three earned runs, and striking out 26 in 21 innings of work.

Prior to that great run, though, Gee gave up eight hits and five earned runs over five innings in a 0-6 home loss to the Braves. For his career Gee is 3-3 with a 3.71 ERA in nine starts against Atlanta.

The Braves, who closed out a three game home set with the Giants with a 3-0 series winning victory last night, will counter Gee with 14 year veteran Tim Hudson. Hudson is 0-2 in his last three outings, despite giving up just 12 hits and four earned runs over 21.2 innings.

Hudson is 16-10 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 28 career starts opposite the Mets. The 37 year old righty has also been great at Turner Field this year, posting a 3-0 record with a 2.39 ERA in six home starts.

Notable Trends: The Braves are 9-1 in their last 10 games as a home favorite with a total between 7.5 and 8 runs.
