Lamar Jackson has been the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy for several months now. The sophomore sensation has thrown for 30 touchdowns and almost 3,400 yards through the air. He's also rushed for better than 1,500 yards with 12 touchdowns on the season, the biggest negative for him was being sacked 38 times.
Deshaun Watson was a finalist last season as well for Clemson. The junior from Georgia threw for 3,900 yards and 37 scores this season, but he was picked off 15 times, which seems to be far too many for a Heisman Trophy winner. Watson actually had better overall numbers last season and he ran quite a bit less this year, only averaging 4.1 yards per carry with six scores.
Baker Mayfield, quarterback for Oklahoma, had a huge year with 38 touchdown passes and better than 3,660 yards through the air. He won't win because the Sooners struggled early and Jackson took a strangle hold of the trophy. His best receiver, Dede Westbrook, was the country's best receiver with 1,465 yards and 16 scores. He's also a finalist.
Jabrill Peppers of Michigan was one of the best defensive players in the country. His stats aren't nearly as good as some of the defensive players in the past, but his impact on the game was clear this season for the Wolverines. Peppers played on all three facets of the game and was instrumental for Michigan in each. He won't win either, but just being invited is a nice honor.
